This guy is smart, and has the background we need. I'm optimistic this could be the start of something great!

I read where someone said he was a good recruiter and in my opinion as far as recruiting goes that will be based off if he can spot G5 talent and the players that if coached up can shine. That is key at this level because if you never had to recruit to the hidden talent instead of star ratings. It can make a huge difference. I think that is why ODU's talent level was weak under Bobby Wilder. He was good at judging 1aa talent but not the speed, quickness, talent to win at the top of CUSA talent. While the difference is not as large of a gap as G5 to top P5...

there is a difference.

I think this is a solid point. We (Rice) are going through that now with Bloomgren, who seemed to think that running a "pound the rock" style offense like he did at Stanford with future NFL players at the offensive line / RB positions would work at a school like Rice, which doesn't have the ability to get the 4/5 star players like Stanford and its facilities / prestige. Two years in, that hasn't worked, which was evident in some modifications to our offense being made at the midpoint of the season. Rahne will have to be flexible from Day 1 as to what type of offense he runs based on a) the players available at ODU now and b) who he can actually realistically recruit at ODU/C-USA type school, which are not the same players as those at Penn State.

Additionally good point on the OC and head coach (former P5 OC) being in sync - not sure that was/is the case at Rice.

Well after talking to some PSU folks here, apparently they're glad he's gone, but then again these are fickle folk who wanted Franklin gone in his first season as well.

When it comes to denial and delusion, some of their fans will go the second mile. Er, extra mile.

I still think ODU got a good hire.

Ditto. After watching the intro and the radio interviews with him I'm feeling really confident in the hire. He said some things right out the gate that have been missing since the program started. Texted the basketball coaches to apologize for the technical foul ahead of time. I condone that level of enthusiasm and support for fellow teams.

I know the Notre Dame folks were thrilled to see us take Numbnuts Junior Sanford off their hands. How’d that one play out?
