Always defer and take the ball to start the 2nd half.

Met Latrelle's family during the halftime break at yesterdays game (also spoke to Latrelle, very nice soft spoken gentleman by the way). His mom said he was recovering well and would probably miss the next game but are hoping he would be back for the semis. He is doing well and hope he is back as soon as possible, he is a great weapon to have!!
Go Dukes!!

Did Latrelle have surgery on the ankle as someone stated in another thread or was it just a severe sprain?
I think it was reported he had the same surgery that Tua had on his ankle earlier in the year.
Yeah, Cignetti said in the O'Neils press conference two Mondays ago, that Palmer had the same type of surgery as the Bama guy. And he also thought that Palmer would be available in the later rounds, if we were to advance that far. (which I took to mean semis & finals).
Interesting surgery technique-here's the link:

Yes. Since these are NCAA games they limit the number of participants to contain costs. But, I haven't seen hide nor hair of Clayton in a while.
I believe I saw him on crutches at Rhode Island.

This seldom happens, but the point of deferring is to hope that the other team doesn't take the ball, because what you are doing is not deciding to defend, but letting the other team decide what it wants to do in the first half. If, for some reason, they say 'defend', you get the ball to start both halves. I've never seen that happen but if there's a chance, you take it.

In HS, I got the the ball for both halves three times.... don t think ive seen college teams make that mistake though ...

Pretty sure I saw him in a boot with crutches tailgating with his family. He was wearing a JMU Football branded parka and headed in relatively early.

When I talked to Latrelle and his family at halftime yesterday he was in sneakers and walking normally. His mom said he has been running and working out some so he is getting closer. As I noted previously, very nice young man if you get a chance to meet him.

3. Where is Clayton Cheatum? Have I missed something? Is he still on the team? How about Latrelle's status?
4. I hope we don't have to play on Friday night! Much prefer the 1 o'clock time in the daylight. But, if it is on ESPN 2 Friday night, I am sure we will get hosed and be the ones.
With regard to 1., normally I would disagree with this for the reason that you could potentially get two offensive drives back-to-back (end of 2nd qtr and beginning of 3rd qtr). This week, however, I agree with you. Northern Iowa's offense is anemic from a whole bunch of injuries (I think, que BDK). If we get out on them by a score and make them play catch up, then we should be in really good shape the whole game.

i take the opposite. this is the week we SHOULD defer. Because there offense is so anemic.
kickoff, use the opening game crowd and player energy to pin them back and get us good field position to get the ball and hopefully score first.
if we take the ball first and fail, that gives them energy, momentum and possibly good field position to sneak a score. then its us who is always playing catch up.

Always defer........the chance of being able to double dip before and after HT is too big a factor not to take it.

Understand the theory, but has that ever been known to happen in Div I FCS or FBS? Seems like a remote possibility to me.

What that you score before HT then get the opening kickoff to begin the 2nd half......it happens weekly in FCS and FBS football. That is the main reason for deferring. It provides a team the opportunity to steal an extra possession. No guarantee but provides the opportunity.

RE: Three or Four Things in One Thread
i always like to defer, but honestly, it shouldn't matter that much. if you lose a game because you deferred or didn't, you have bigger fish to fry. besides, we'll never know what would have happened if we had chosen to receive. we're not going to do a whole Butterfly Effect thing, are we?
on Clayton Cheatham, i believe he started at WVU so he has had his chance. my guess is that he is not the body type we're looking for in this super run-heavy system. he's a little smaller and is not as good of a blocker as Painter. and Painter has shown that he can catch the ball when needed. i think it's a wise call to use Painter as much as we have. next time we're on offense, watch Painter and don't watch the ball. dude is a f***ing beast.

Agree, plus Painter has pretty decent hands too and presents that 'Big' target you like in a TE.

Saw Latrelle after the game and as noted in he was in sneakers and seemed fine. He was taking pictures with some kids outside the APC.

Glad to hear the positive news on Latrelle. Just keep doing what the Doctors and training staff say.
