RE: Poll: How do CUSA Fans rate their own fanaticism
People have to have that next hill to climb, either on their own, or by association. Ideally, the top schools in your conference are annually challenging for something significant ("significant" as defined internally, not necessarily externally), but if not, you at least need a Boise.

Yes, no, maybe? If not that, what's a better explanation?

RE: Poll: How do CUSA Fans rate their own fanaticism
hehe... for what it matters, it's come to light that a certain frequent poster here decided he didn't like how the poll results were trending, and one of his friends who he's not aware is also a friend of mine and who I ran into yesterday ratted in the course of conversation that the certain frequent poster made it his business to summon up an influx of voters that were more to his liking...

Petty? Childish? Par for the course?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

We come to this place as adult sports fans to discuss common interests, but for some people, it's always more like they felt left out of the middle school cliques drama, so they make up for it now.

5 years ago we were kicking butt and taking names. So much fun to watch. The last 2 years were hard. Hopefully my interest will continue to grow again.

RE: Poll: How do CUSA Fans rate their own fanaticism
Interest raisers:
* Step up to higher level of football
* Markedly higher quality of OOC opponents (goodbye Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Howard, hello Virginia Tech, Virginia and North Carolina!)
* New stadium

Interest droppers:
* Declining quality of performance, particularly the past two seasons
* New-car smell gone now that ODU football is 10 years old
* Fewer regional games and almost none against teams at ODU's level

Tipping the scale to "slightly less interest" is that I'm less engaged in watching college football than I was five years ago, and that's not ODU's or CUSA's fault. I like college football fine but I used to spend all day watching games. Now, well, it's not like my life is any fuller (far from it), it's that football is less a priority.

Great post, and it's so true. We're overloaded with sports and sports talk. If only we cared as much about our crumbling infrastructure and terrible educational system.

I can't speak for all Rice fans, but my interest has slowly waned since the SWC broke up in 1995. The last five years have been a nightmare, and has accelerated the process. It's hard to get excited, but I drag myself to the stadium to support the players. It's very, very hard to do.

Aside: To which, I say... who is Stephen Smith but a "sports Kardashian"... famous for being famous... able to talk... done nothing actually to merit any credibility... and so why should any of us ever, ever, ever give him a single second of our time?

Honestly. I wish we there was a thingee on remote controls that, if someone selects one of those shows, it self-destructs.

UAB football: Same interest, more obnoxious
UAB hoops: significantly less interested. Such a sad state.

Right.

So, to the point of my bringing it up, the poll is skewed by about 5-10 to one side of the curve that it wasn't before by those "fans," aka the middle school element.
