Getting AD Jeremy McClain in there will help that greatly. I think he's phenomenal at hiring coaches, and not settling.

Getting rid of Hopson and getting a young, detail-oriented coordinator or even a young FCS head coach with a stellar history would be the next thing to do. It would help USM a lot to find a HC that is willing to get out of his office, go around campus to meet and greet with students, show up at basketball games and other events, and be a notable presence around town.

Neal Brown did all of that, and he got the city of Troy and the students very much connected back into the football program in a BIG way. We've had huge student turnout ever since, and we went on a run of 25-straight home games where we never had less than 20K+ attendance (which set a Sun Belt record) until that ended last weekend against App State.

If you guys could just get Hopson out of there, and then let Jeremy McClain have his way... I think you may see a huge turnaround with football.

Thanks...good thoughts and I couldn't have said it better myself. We may be priced out of a big name P5 OC but we can get a hungry up-and-comer FCS coach for $500-750K.

This may sound like I'm joking or something, but I'm not. Mark Hudspeth would probably jump at the opportunity. He's got ties to the state of Mississippi through Delta State and Miss State. He can win if you don't let him get lazy.

Hud would never come here. One he wants the state job, and second there is some connection between his ncaa issues at ul and us.

RE: Southern Miss Future
The next coach at Southern Miss should be a young up and comer. Preferably someone who has never attended, coached at or even looked Southern Miss up on the internet (I'd sure hate to get another coach who just wants to be one of us). He should say in his interview he doesnt even plan to unpack and is leaving his good furniture and dishes in storage for when he gets the job he really wants. Then we hire another guy who feels exactly the same when the last guy leaves in 4 years (hopefully earlier) after being successful, then we do it again and again and utilize the increased revenue from the increase in fan interest to boost up our athletic budget (and rebranding isn't a bad idea either). This one of us culture is what is killing us. If you want to be at Southern Miss you aren't motivated enough to be the type of coach we need and that goes for most of the schools in this league. If a coach tells you your school is his dream job then you need to search elsewhere.

RE: Southern Miss Future
The one thing that I sure have noticed, watching former SEC OC or DC coaches get CUSA head coaching job.

They usually have at least 2 of the following weaknesses, that coaches that have moved up the ranks don't have (at least 1 HC job)

1) can't develop potential talent, or identify diamonds in the rough,
2) spoiled by the talent that their school had,
3) were a good recruiter or a good coach (not both),
4) worked as a DC for a defensive minded HC or as a OC for a offensive minded HC,
5) never had to hire a staff

Neil Callaway, Garrick McGee, and Ellis Johsnon are just a few disasters that come to mind.

I agree that the lack of a large city and large businesses (that locate in large cities) that can become corporate sponsors and the resulting smaller budget makes things more challenging at Southern Miss than some of the other peers.

I also imagine that the exodus of alums once they graduate from the Hattiesburg area, also has a negative effect.

I recommend using a pressure washer on your football stadium. Mildew on concrete doesn’t look good.

You'd be surprised how the boards sings when we see a pressure washer at M M Roberts. It's like any early Christmas for Southern Miss fans and more entertaining than our football team 90% of the time.

Wouldn't it be something to fire Hopson and hire Art Briles as head coach? Our recruiting is sooooo very bad. We just throw out offers left and right...more than any other D1 school and see who sticks. We need a shake up and someone saying finishing 3rd in CUSA West is unacceptable going forward.

We should keep Hopson. He is only paid 500K per year. What do you think we could find on the open market at that salary rate or even 750K per year? I don't think he is great, but he is doing pretty well with no budget to work with.

There are plenty of people we could get better than Hopson. This type of complacency with mediocrity is basically what our entire leadership is okay with. It's what has us with Hopson and Ladner, except Ladner will win one D1 game this year.

Honestly, we need to clean house in Hattiesburg. We have a President put in place by the IHL to keep us right where we are. He doesn't care about Athletics in the slightest, which is why he's perfectly okay with our current state. We have a football coach who believes 7-5 in the worst conference in America is a great accomplishment, we have a basketball coach who's crowning achievement is one game over .500 at Southeastern Louisiana, and we have a baseball coach who schedules incredibly weak to make sure he keeps his 40 win streak alive.

Meanwhile, recruiting in all three is the worst it's been in a decade. We are literally competing with 1-AA schools for recruits and we're the only D1 school actually offering them. That should be sign enough that Hopson doesn't care to fight for good talent, just settle for the lowest that will come. Ladner's team looks atrocious and it's not like we lost a ton of players after last year. We're going to be 10x worse than last year in basketball, a year we weren't good either.

We're yet to see how baseball will play out. I presume a lot of wins with a 1-2 Regional...again...

It says that Jay Hopson is undoubtedly the HC at Southern Miss.

That being said, I have no desire for USM to join the SBC...but if the SBC continues to have more ranked teams in the T25 and has teams that beat P5 schools during the regular season more than CUSA does, then my opinion might change. In fact, I would like to think any CUSA school would share this opinion.

Who is the IHL??

Institute of Higher Learning. They’re the group that appoints new Presidents, approves addition of programs, etc. Historically, it’s been run by Ole Miss and State grads who would love for us to drop every sport we have. Word is that when we went to hire a new President, every Southern Miss person part of the search was against Bennett, but the IHL hired him against USM wishes because he was a ‘yes man’ that would do as told by them and be a diversity selection to make MS look like it was progressive. At least, this is what I’ve heard from people close to the situation.

IHL hurts Southern Miss every chance it can.

LOL, what does that say about your program Mr. .500?
I'm sorry didn't realize that Charlotte was a powerhouse.. Tell me oh great powerhouse how did we get so lucky to invite you into our humble conference?

Your AD way back in 1991 was smart enough to recognize our potential in basketball alone to join the other Metro Conference AD's in inviting us to that conference.

And the rest is history.
So let me get this straight.. USM should step back to SBC while Charlotte does what exactly?

I'm fine with being
in a conference with Southern Miss. Some of your fans are the ones that want to be anywhere else but here. 07-coffee3
