Well in our glory we were competing well with Louisville so when they left it’d been nice to go with them. But USM is its own worst enemy. But you and your little Florida school will go back to being the bottom feeders you were when Daniel Tosh’s twin leaves for Ole Miss.

You do realize that the "little Florida school" is bigger, richer, higher-ranked academically than yours, right?

Are we going to go back to "bottom feeders"? Who knows. If we do, you know who we're going to meet there? Your school.

I always wondered who would take ECU's place as the biggest chest pounders.. Now I know. Thanks FAU.

What's funnier is I voiced my opinion and the powerhouse of FAU and their fans are getting all pissy...

You may have a different definition for "chest pounding" than I do.
Not you as much as the other guy. You seem level headed. It's the fan that can't hold his own I'm referring to.

Ha ha, love it. Another bitter USM *****. I’ll bet the future of FAU football against whatever it is you have going on in Hattiesburg any day.
I'm sorry. Can you not handle the truth? You started it and appears I hit a tender spot for you cause you know I'm right.. Good day sir.

What truth? The fact that you feel you can't hack it in CUSA, that truth? The fact that your glory days are a many years behind you, that fact? Don't worry, I can handle anything an old bitter USM fan can dish out.

You make a nasty comment and then get all worked up when someone calls you out on it. You apparently are the one that can handle his own.

So never called you out at any point but you "would love" to know where we thought we should be.. So I called you out and you wanna call me a bitter old whatever.. I get it you just got weened off mama's teet or maybe you're still on it, but whatever.. You were snarky in your comment to me and I gave it back.. You took it another step cause I hit a nerve. I get it.

One day when you want to have a grown up conversation, look me up. I love to talk football, but until then you'll get what you give in return from me. Be warned with old age and bitterness comes comments that'll hurt your snowflaked ass.

While I'll admit we have sucked for the better part of a decade now, that doesn't speak to our ability to compete (and in my opinion dominate) in CUSA. It has far more to do with a disastrous coaching hire that killed three years, then a coach leaving a week before signing day and us scrambling to get someone, that someone being pretty mediocre at best. These two things, combined with an absolutely incompetent administration and a President that doesn't care about sports has led to where we are. That doesn't change who we can be (and I think every school here can say that), just about where we are.

I would prefer a different conference. Should’ve been there already but only the Good Lord and our administration knows why we’re not. But we’re here might as well make the best of it. Just need competent people leading us.

I would love to know what conference you think that should be.

Actually, in our "glory", we were beating Louisville like a red headed step child. Our record against Louisville is 15-10-1, and that's with us losing the last six games. So we were 15-4-1 against them at the turn of the century. In fact, our record against those AAC teams (where UL initially went) is as follows;

32-17-1 vs Memphis
23-7 vs Tulane
26-12 vs East Carolina
6-2 vs Central Fl
3-1 vs South Fl
3-1 vs SMU
1-0 vs Navy
3-4 vs Tulsa
7-8 vs Cincy

So put that together and see if you can figure out what conference gdunn was talking about.

Great. Good thing the landscape of college football hasn’t change any.
USM’s future success in the future because they were good in the 90’s has as much correlation as the 2020 Cincinnati reds success being because of Johnny bench, Pete rose and the big red machine were awesome in the 70’s.

Conference talk board. Read the title. Your guy made this thread on a public board.

Ask mods to move to your message board if your AD hasn’t sold it to Nebraska to keep the lights on.

We were still competing with Louisville when them and Cincy left for the Big East.. If we could've went with them... We might've gotten better maybe made more money... Might've done worse and been stuck in the AAC.. We don't know. I feel like our front office didn't try hard enough when other teams like Louisville, Cincy, USF, and then the last round with Houston, Tulsa, Memphis, Tulane, and ECU left to get us in with them. Again we didn't go anywhere so we just need to do the best we can and make the best of it. The people upset about it are the ones who've been around and have seen this team when they were full of potential. It's frustrating.

CardinalBlackTrojan: I think McCain gives Hopson one more year to produce and then hires his own man. I am looking forward to his next hire, regardless of when that is, and do think you are right about the type coach we need. Fedora in football and Tyndall in Bball were that kind of coach and people bought in. Fedora made good on his fourth season before moving onto a better paying job and Tyndall had our fans the most bought-in to bball they'd been since the 80s.

Ourland: Yes, Assistant Coach pay is our biggest weakness. We've repeatedly had coaches hired away to the same positions at other G5 (even C-USA) schools. That makes the HC job very hard. I don't know if Hopson is the answer, but no one will be much of an answer when any good assistant can be snatched up by our peer schools to the same position at a large pay increase.

With 1:56 left in the game Southern Miss was down 28-7 facing a fourth and goal from five yard line. Rather than going for it, your coach decided to kick the field goal. While that seemed like an odd choice, I assumed that Hopson had already conceded the game and maybe just want to score double figures or maybe give your kicker some confidence. There's no way anyone would make that decision if they still felt like they had a chance to win. Score was 28-10.

But then USM onside kicks, which was recovered by the 'Tops. Then instead of letting WKU run out the clock Hopson uses all three timeouts on the next three plays. WKU eventually got a first down on 4th & 1, so they never got the ball back, but the onside and timeout decisions made it obvious that Hopson WAS still trying to win the game.

So my question is this with being behind by 21 points. The only chance you have to extend or win the game is scoring a TD, then getting two more TD's after recovering onside kicks. Unlikely but not impossible with almost two minutes left in the game.
What absolute fool would think he had a better chance of kicking a FG, then recovering three onside kicks and scoring three TD's in less than 2 minutes?!

We had a coach last year that made similar ignorant in-game decisions, and that was enough for me to say judge that he didn't have the intelligence to be running an FBS program. Southern Miss deserves better than that.

He explained that to the media as "we weren't sure what the tie breakers were (for division champ) and wanted to make sure we got points in case that factored in". That having been said, yes it was incredibly stupid.
