RE: Chris Petersen Stepping Down
Chris Peterson, by the stats...

Overall record for 14 seasons as an FBS head coach: 146-38 (0.7935) with 10 double-digit win seasons. Finished ranked in the AP poll 9/14 seasons (5, 11, 4, 9, 8, 18, 4, 16, 13).

Qualifying for bowls each year. Bowl record (6-6) - didn't coach in 2013 when Boise St made the Hawaii Bowl after signing with Washington and this year's bowl hasn't occurred yet.

Major Bowls (2-3): 2 BCS Fiesta Bowl wins with Boise St (Oklahoma, TCU) and 3 losses with Washington (CFP Peach Bowl - Alabama; NY6 Fiesta Bowl - Penn St; NY6 Rose Bowl - Ohio St)

4 WAC conference titles in 5 years, 1 MWC conference title in 3 years, and 2 PAC conference titles in 6 years.

Will be interesting to see if retires from coaching or takes some off before jumping back on elsewhere.

At the rate he was winning in Boise, one has to wonder had he spent the rest of his career there. His career winning percentage would have been insane.

I don't think he'll retire. I do wonder if he's burned out, though. Like, he has to run Washington up to this level, and people out there consider the PAC "down" because programs like USC, Oregon, or UCLA aren't running on all cylinders.

And, out here, PAC football may as well be a non-major. Even in his best year, people didn't buy Washington as a legitimate playoff team. You know, after what he had to hear in Boise, to get to a major program and STILL hear that? What's the point? What are you doing this for?

Either he comes out east or he goes pro. I kind of hope he goes pro, just to see how it suits him. Let the next few years unfold through the insanity it's sure to be, and come back when it's settling, if he wants to return.

Much tougher conference.

Not really. More pressure to win at Washington for sure.

He went from an academically weak school with rabid local fan support and a system that allowed players too academically shaky to go Pac-12 to go there, to a public Ivy with less support than the local MLS team, and everyone else in the conference had Pac-12 talent too.
Washington's a tougher job and it's not even close. Boise State has so many built-in advantages.

BSU competes with PAC12 schools in recruiting, including UW. When Petersen became the UW coach, he took several BSU commits with him. BSU signs players with Ivy League offers. The notion BSU has some sort of advantage because they take players "too academically shaky to go to the PAC12" is a total lie. Certainly the media scrutiny and pressure at UW and the in-conference competition at UW exceeds what a coach experiences at BSU, but BSU has fired coaches with winning records because they did not win up to expectations. The expectations are exceptionally high at BSU. Oh, and Petersen's last few years at BSU were hardly stellar.
