RE: George Washington...Colonials??
what was UMass before the minutemen?
side note how long before that name is challenged for being sexist and excluding women? (or any gender)

It's a slippery slope. Community College of Philadelphia dropped the Colonial name last year. When 75% of your student body identifies as a minority, that's not really SJW.

Irreverence is what it is. If you hate what these hippies do, well, they hate how you idolize these other things.

I mean, if you want to retain homage to some of this stuff without the triggers, Blue Coats, Generals, Presidents, Commanders...or is nothing safe?

Revolutionaries? That would be the only reasonable one from the bunch. They should go with something that allows the student section and whatnot to be called the Continental Army though, since that was the name of the forces Washington commanded.

I think UMass's name change is the exception, not the rule.

The only two that I have personal knowledge of have been abysmal failures:

Changing from Miami Redskins to Miami Redhawks lost a lot of alumni interest.

Case Rough Riders combined with Western Reserve Redcats to become the Case Western Reserve Spartans. Big yawn. Talk about a missed opportunity.

Hard to justify Redskins. RedHawk is a pretty lousy alternative, but that change was justified. Some of this stuff is just stupid (ie Marquette giving up Warriors or complaining about Braves), but Redskins and Redmen and Indians are hard to justify.

Why would Colonials offend anyone, what is offensive about it. Also Philly is likely majority black so they are not minorities there.

Only the men's teams are the Minutemen. The women's teams all go by Minutewomen. If anything I'm guessing that if someone challenges it for not being all encompassing there will be a:

Quote:The men's teams all compete in a male identified gender sport and go by the male pronoun, and similar for the women's teams. If you personally feel like neither of these represent you then you may call yourself "Minuteperson" or any other form of it.

Telling someone on your first date that you’re a minuteman will ensure that you don’t get a second date 07-coffee3

I mean in going to away games I heard lots of "You are Minutemen!" chants from the opposing fans. So yeah, that one writes itself.

That's my point - even if a name change was justified*, there's a high probability that the new name will end up being very unpopular.

* Repeated polling shows that the vast majority of Indians aren't offended by native nicknames. There's even lots of high schools that are majority Native American and call themselves the Redskins. It's only offensive if you have a racist mascot like Cleveland's MLB team.

Miami (OH) has a good claim to a Native American mascot. The school is named after the Indian tribe who used to inhabit the region, and the university makes a point to partner with the tribe on several initiatives.

When referring to the teams collectively—not just Minutemen or Minutewomen—the custom is to simply call them the Minutiae.

Being a "Minute Man" would be an improvement for Rick Pitino. COGS

Current Alumni count is ~240K worldwide. Add in the current student population you can simply call the collective of us "6 months" or "half a year"

RE: George Washington...Colonials??
My takes on this:

1) I do not think that current students alone should determine if a nickname is changed. At the very least, alumni should have a vote as well, as they have a stake in the nickname. I sure know that as a USF alumnus, if they wanted to change the name "Bulls" to something else, then i would want a vote.

2) Regardless of what a majority wants, these nickname-change proposals seem to win more times than not. Often, that's because the decision is made by a university elite that is decidedly liberal.

So I expect the "Colonial" name to be changed.

3) History also shows that things usually "do not stop there". That is, changing the GW nickname to "Hippos" won't cause these liberal activists to go away, they will then advance towards the next target, which could be the name "George Washington" itself, on the grounds that he was a Colonist who fought Native Americans and a slave-owner and therefore not to be respected.

For years, right-wingers have predicted this. That is, in the fights over monuments and things named after confederate personages like Robert E. Lee, some defenders have said "just wait, they will come for your heroes next". And that has started, e.g., Thomas Jefferson's name has already been stripped off some things like the Jefferson-Jackson dinner that many democratic parties used to hold.

All of this is regarded by liberals as "progress", progressing towards the next liberal goal.

Remember Long Beach even had its “49ers” name targetted and abolished last year. They’ll keep moving to the next target. It’s so ridiculously self-righteous.
