Liberty beat a TON of 2-win teams, Toledo at the bottom of the MAC West won't look good.

Liberty has great connections to powerful people. They will get a bowl bid.

I think Toledo was going in a downward spiral. Looked good early in the season -- crumbled, later.

That said, it'd be easier to say EMU gets into the Detroit Bowl because it's close to home. Thing is, it's not much closer than Toledo.

Personally I'm pissed that EMU got that bowl and not WMU. But EMU beat WMU. EMU/WMU/CMU/Toledo -- all would love to go to that bowl. Low cost (bus ride), close to home, tons of fans.

But EMU beat WMU so I could see why they'd get the nod above WMU. But WMU has a better record and has more fans -- although EMU is closer to it, so maybe they figured it'd be about even or better?

Starting 3-1 and very nearly 4-0 and then bombing out to a 3-5 league record didn't help

And perhaps a more vaguely recognizable brand than Kent State or EMU ... but also the smaller Kent State and EMU fanbases are all happy to at least get to go to a bowl, and a lot of the Toledo fanbase is ticked off at the coach and the admin. Detroit may have gone for the hungry fanbase over the angry one.

I think that’s it. Toledo fans have high expectations. All-time win percentage of 0.547, 18 bowl games, and 14 conference titles. It’s a good program that is down from top-to-bottom.

I was wondering how Kent State was selected over Toledo. That's what I came here to find out.

"Selected" is a dubious word choice.

The lowest two Bowls in question for those 6-6 MAC schools pay barely over $100K per school, and it comes in the form of a block of tickets (say 2,500 that the school has to sell for $50 each). It's more the case of which coach and athletic department agreed to spend the money on.

Jason Candle has finished 1st or 2nd in the MAC his first four years and I suspect he felt this year's 5th place (yes ahead of two schools of the MAC who accepted invites) didn't warrant a bowl appearance and was below the standards he set. So he passed.

Kent State is actually going to a slightly higher paying Bowl than Buffalo, filling in the "Tropical Smoothie Frisco Bowl" when no more AAC schools qualified. Even so the payout less than $300K and at least half that is probably in tickets. But their coach and administration wanted a Bowl.

Selected is not a completely accurate description.

This is why I was talking about the Detroit Bowl making a pick. Detroit is against a P5 opponent and it's close enough to either Toledo or EMU that travel cost is not an issue ... it's a "neutral site next door" game for either.

I don't know whether Detroit passed over Toledo or Toledo demurred, but if Detroit passed on Toledo in favor of EMU, then Toledo passing on the Frisco would indeed not be surprising.

BTW, any of you who voted after the bowls were all decided gets no points. Especially not the ones who voted for a school other than Toledo!
