Why the hell is the name Wooden so hard to remember for JMU announcers this year? They either call him Wooten or Woodson.

Guess they never heard of basketball coaching legend John Wooden? That alone should help them to remember the correct pronunciation!

Are you talking about ECU or us?

Right now, JMU is the exact opposite of a team that can shoot.

We are currently ranked 309 out of 350 DI teams in FG%.

We are ranked 259th out of 350 in 3 point shooting percentage.

And the icing on the cake is our free throw shooting %. We are ranked 300th out of 350.

Maybe I should have said this team can score. At UVA we scored 34. The rest is 70,78,78,79, 80, 96 and 99. I think the stats from the UVA game were so bad they dragged down the season totals. JMU has plenty of offense. It’s defense concerns me especially late in games. Today they made free throws and had just enough defense to win by 10.

Our freshman are impressive. They have no fear and look like they belong in D1. Love Wilson’s baby hook he has developed. This team is now 10 deep with Flowers. If he can stay healthy, he gives the Dukes a little more size. He looked pretty good today given the time off and I am not saying that because he made two 3s. He played good defense and was a presence in the post.

Now hold on. He said we can shoot, and we clearly can.

He said nothing about make.

I stand by Nations post.

Kk. Good way to bounce back, make 50% of 3’s, get it done in the Free line and actually score some 2s when they’ve been there for the taking all day long.

Take the W and move on.

EZU sucks, but likely beats a Coppin St. still plenty to work on.

Duuuuuuukes!

Jacobs didn't play due to a minor ankle injury sustained during the Coppin State game. Nice to see some of the other guys get some playing time and contribute.

Dukes showed a glimpse of the enormous talent on this roster yesterday. Christmas, Wilson and Banks all played well. Flowers was impressive in his brief stint. Wilson returning to form after starting the season injured. Plenty to work on going forward. A star turn by Christmas in any event...looks like coaching staff have adjusted his shot a bit and it has paid off in the near term.

Bingo Cent. He had teammates making shots plus he was feeding Wilson in the post the entire first half. The team did not need him to score. Kudos to him for not forcing up shots to get his. He fed the guys who were hot.

In the second half when JMU needed a spark he provided it. He also hit his free throws down the stretch. It was one of his best games as a Duke because he did not force things. He took what the defense gave and was a complete team player. I loved it!

I know that Lewis needs to shoot better still but his game has improved in terms of assists, rebounds, and turnovers.

You say this after one nice win. To say someone's game has improved, you need a block of good performances, not just one. He was terrible two games ago. You appear to be easily swayed with a short memory. Lewis would be better coming in from the bench much the same as MB utilized AJ Davis with more minutes than the starters. I do agree that he had an impressive game.

Look at his averages- they are improved. He still only shoots 30% from 3 and 35% overall so that obviously needs to improve but Lewis is averaging nearly 8 rebounds per game to go with 5 assists and 18+ points. He has over a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio.

not sure if I follow- I have always defended Lewis when he deserves to be defended- no matter if the team wins or loses.

He can frustrate you at times but he takes too much grief on these boards IMO and I've mentioned that before and the fact that the other areas of his game have improved this year. I need to watch him closer on Defense because I think he gets beat too often. He's far from a perfect player but I think he's the best that JMU has. Banks can be the best but he needs to stay aggressive and at times can look a step slow or disappear. Lewis is generally up for the challenge no matter who is the competition. He has the ability to make all the shots- the deep 3, the clutch free throw, the and one drive. He has played a little more within himself as a Junior and those are strong rebound and ball control numbers. Certainly not numbers indicative of a selfish me first player who doesn't get it and should be benched.

I disagree with the AJ Davis comparison. He's a guy who didn't buy in or connect with the Head Coach. Lewis is really the antithesis. You want to blame Rowe for giving him too much freedom and responsibility- that's fair. I personally think the mutual trust and relationship between Lewis and Rowe is part of the reason Matt has stayed at JMU but I know that some people on these boards aren't a fan of his game. I think he's the type of guy folks will appreciate more and more as he continues to fine tune his game.

Here's my observation about the team and coach- they badly want to win as a team but they are still learning how to if that makes sense. At some point that may be worth some kudos but if it doesn't get the job done there will be changes but I have no doubt that they want to win playing team ball and Lewis I think is very much wired that way. He just needs to learn how.

Please don't take my posting wrong, Lewis is the most valuable player on our team. We'd be a total wreck without him. I just find it odd to say how much he's improved at this moment versus four days ago. You didn't and you would not have been pointing out how much he's improved following the Coppin State game. You chose one game removed from the team's worst performance of this season. Give me at least three good performances in a row, then talk about improvement all you want.

RE: ECU @ JMU hoops
The loss to Coppin State was a bad loss on the team- I'm not sure if I would categorize Matt Lewis as having a bad game but the whole team goes down with the ship because Coppin scored at will. Lewis went for 28 points had 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 turnovers and was 13-15 from the line most of it in the second half when the Dukes were trying to come back and couldn't connect from distance. He shot under his averages.

Here's his last 4 games (@ ODU, vs New Hampshire, vs Coppin, vs Charlotte)

85 points
10/30 from 3 (33%)
19/52 from 2
37/46 from the line
26 rebounds
23 assists/11 turnovers
3 blocks

He had a bad game at Mason but I think he's played 4 solid to good games since.

We'll need another good game from him and Banks on Wednesday at Radford since they seem guard heavy.
2 steals

One thing Saturday tells us -

If we shoot 60% for the game, and Christmas can hit 5-5 from behind the arc we can beat a a 2-5 team by 10 at home.

Christmas is the most talented player on the team. The freshman look solid. Wilson appears to be what we need on the backboards. I feel more highly about Lewis than most. Banks is playing amazing.

I'm not doubting the talent. UVA is the only team we have played that has been more talented.
