Rutgers needs a few things when they hire the new coach.
1. A Jersey guy (should go without saying but there I said it)
2. An offensive minded guy with a philosophy that creates players with talent in open space.
3. A phenomenal developer of talent (top players in Jersey rarely want to go to Rutgers so the players you get need to be developed physically and mentally)
4. A great recruiter that can unearth talent in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
5. A guy with good character and no hints of scandal

I honestly think that the Scarlet Knight faithful need all 5 of those to not only get the program moving but to get to a mid to long term goal of 8 wins per season. It's tough with this division but if you cede Ohio State, Michigan, & Penn State you have 9 games you can win (BTW Sparty is on a downward trajectory that's why I include them in mid range winnable)

I am not one of those fans that hates Rutgers. I think they have potential they've just been mismanaged for a long time and lacking money for even longer. That reminds me. The "B1G trial period" is almost over. Rutgers has borrowed some but their B1G payouts are about to get handsome. The athletic director Pat Hobbs has made astute moves with the most obvious being the hiring of Steve Pikiell.
Some people only focus on what a thing is and not what it can be. If you took a look at all of the assets Rutgers has (local talent, media market, visible conference, every game televised you may start to think as I do that 8-9 wins per year is attainable if they get the right guy in there.

No coach worth a darn is going to succeed and last there if there isn't Big Ten-level infrastructure and facilities in place or on the immediate horizon.

This is more than just finding a coach.

Paul Johnson

Unique (these days) offense. Run the ball. Hog the ball.

They can’t compete otherwise.

Brett Bielema could turn them into a bowl eligibility program

Plan B should be hiring Al Golden. He's a Jersey guy who built the Temple football program ground up in the early 2000s.

He was five games under .500 at Arkansas with much better facilities.

And the moment he makes a winner out of that program, his price will go way up.

I think Schiano has been bad ever since he left Rutgers to begin with and that includes his job as Ohio State's defensive coordinator the past few years. He could have gotten Rutgers decent over 3-5 years, but the issue with Schiano is the admin/fans would think he could win right away and momentum would be loss after a couple of poor seasons.

They need a young up and comer with energy who the fan base/players are willing to buy into a program that may take a few years to just get around .500 ball. A guy like PJ Fleck except not his douche-bag qualities.

Lol, totally agree with the "douche-bag qualities" comment.

I was just pointing out that just being a Jersey guy ain't enough.

ND finally paid Weis off.

Don't worry, it's Rutgers. You will likely pick someone even worse than Weis.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Weiss really made out and undeservedly so. I am not a ND fan, but I am glad Weiss is out of the hair, so to speak.

Not necessarily. It will take years to reverse the damage that Chris Ash did. Schiano is a known entity in NJ and he would have an easier road than anyone else who is coming in and starting from scratch. This is also tough to overcome when it looks like the administration just isn't committed to football or athletics.

We all know it's a long haul to get the program to mediocrity. Ash finished the job that Flood started, whatever talent that is here is running into the transfer portal, high school coaches haven't heard from the head coach in years, the AD doesn't want to be a smaller persona than his football coach, and the school president doesn't seem to care about athletics. The BOG goes into sticker shock at the cost of keeping up with the Joneses in the Big 10. The fact that Schiano (or any other experienced head coach) would even think about coming here is nothing short of miraculous.

Media reports out today that Rutgers and Schiano are still negotiating, and that a deal is likely.
