RE: CFP Week 13
I see they decided they needed a second ACC team to make the CCG a top-25 match up

Was tOSU’s win over Penn State really good enough for the Buckeyes to jump LSU?

RE: CFP Week 13
I wish we had a gauge on how close schools are to each other according to the committee.

OSU beat a top ten team. LSU played Arkansas.

Ohio State has a much stronger closing schedule before the CCG than LSU.

I just don’t see that win as being better than LSU beating Bama in T-Town. Now I would agree with moving tOSU ahead with a win over Michigan as that would give the Buckeyes 4 wins over CFP top 25 teams versus LSU’s three. But not yet.

Nope, LSU had the better body of work. Mistaken eye test.

Assuming they both win out, it will be very interesting to see where Ohio St and LSU end up after the CCGs. LSU will have a tougher opponent but what will the aggregate value of beating Mich and Wisc/Minn vs TAMU and UGA?

It's to sell tickets IMO. Ohio State will get the Fiesta Bowl vs Utah if they win out. Big alumni base in Phoenix area. Utah will travel in droves to Phoenix. Fiesta Bowl is generally the least attended of the college football playoff sites. Puts LSU vs Clemson in Atlanta. No home field advantage for either there since they will sell 50/50 easy.

Sadly, that is probably a consideration. Would work massively to Ohio State's advantage as, lets face it, everyone knows that among those four, Utah is the weakest sister.

RE: CFP Week 13
CFP vs Massey composite. Compared to the MC, we can say the following things about teams and conferences:

1) SEC: The MC comports almost exactly with the CFP. No SEC team is more than 2 spots different from the MC to CFP. The total deviation across five teams is just 4 spots.

2) ACC: The biggest outlier in the rankings is VT, which is CFP ranked #23, a full 11 spots above its MC rank of 34. This lends support to the poster who said the CFP wants two ACC teams in the rankings to go easy on the Orange Bowl.

3) Big 12: The CFP is smiling on the Big 12, a big bias towards it. All four ranked Big 12 teams are ranked higher than their MC ratings, and by at least two spots, the biggest being Baylor, which at 9 is four spots higher than its 13 MC rating.

4) B1G: The committee is all over the map on the B1G. Three B1G teams are ranked within two of their MC rating, but Minnesota is +7, rated CFP 8 and MC 15, while Penn State at -4 and Michigan at -5 are underrated by the CFP.

5) PAC: The ratings of the PAC teams, like the SEC teams, are in almost perfect accord.

6) Indie: Notre Dame continues to get no respect, being -5 in the CFP at 16, compared to its MC rating of 11.

7) G5: The AAC vs MW ratings are very similar, but at 25, App State is at -4 compared to its MC rating of 21.

Finally, the only MC top 25 left out of the CFP is Navy, 23 in the MC and unranked in the CFP. VT has their spot.

I believe what you’re seeing is the “Alabama is down therefore The SEC must be down” effect with Ohio State jumping LSU. That’s simply not true. That is what happens when one team dominates college football the way Alabama has the last few years.

heard a great reason why they switched Ohio St/LSU. To set it up where Alabama makes playoff and they play Ohio St instead of LSU.

I could buy that, but the committee really took a shine to the Big 12 this week, so to me it seems like they are trying to set Oklahoma up to grab the #4 spot. Oklahoma is already at #7, and looks to have games vs #21 and #9 remaining. Both Oklahoma State and Baylor are ranked significantly higher than they are in the computers so it looks like the CFP is trying to burnish Oklahoma's resume.

Win those, and they probably go past Alabama.

It was actually a bad ranking night for Alabama in that sense. It also hurt that the CFP boosted Baylor and Minnesota. That positions them to get in over Alabama if they defy the odds and run the table and win the Big 12 or B1G as one-loss champs.

Alabama still needs help. Several games still have to break their way for them to get in. The CFP is not likely to put Alabama in over a 1-loss P5 champ.

Also, moving LSU down to #2 is a signal that the committee doesn't think LSU is a god-like team. It actually sets the CFP up to knock LSU out of the playoffs if they were to lose to Georgia in the SEC title game.

Overall, if you don't like the idea of (a) Alabama in the playoffs or (b) two SEC teams in the playoffs, this was a very good ranking night.
