I was looking at ODU's schedule... they were really set up for failure this year.

They get beat by Virginia and Virginia Tech, lose a hard fought game to ECU... then have to open conference play with 4 teams that ended up being some of the best teams in CUSA: WKU, Marshall, UAB, and then FAU. Did ODU get the toughest conference schedule out of any CUSA team?

But ODU has no business dismissing this year's performance on scheduling. I'm not among the pitchfork brigade, but if that excuse were offered up after a 1-11 season, I would consider joining in.

Oddly enough, we could have beaten Virginia Tech, and should have beaten Virginia and ECU. Those games occurred before our defense packed it in and before teams figured out that we were no threat to throw the football. Our worst performances were in conference play.

Crossover games aside (and they did play the West champs)... the East was the tougher division, and unfairly they were the only team in the east that didn’t get to play that one cupcake team in the East!

Actually, we played them in practice every day.

You have to think when the scheduling gods were doing their thing they believed Charlotte was a gift. Early in the season we would have been.

You wonder what might have happened had ODU beaten Virginia. I don’t think it solves any of the personnel/coaching issues but it would have done wonders for their psyche and momentum is a force multiplier. Perhaps some of those close Ls become Ws and ODU has a puncher’s chance at a bowl bid. Or they just go 2-10 and deliver the Cavs a horribly embarrassing loss (which would be on brand for ODU, whose basketball team started 2-21 during the fateful Drunken Blaine season, but one of those 2 was a neutral-site win over UVA.)
