Belk to end 9-year run as sponsor of annual Charlotte bowl game
Quote:Officials say the foundation is actively speaking with potential title sponsors for 2020 and beyond. In addition to the annual bowl game, the sponsorship also includes the season-opening college kickoff game, which will feature Notre Dame and Wake Forest in 2020.

Maybe things will start to go back like they were before corporate sponsors were in bowl.

The 18th annual Dollar General Bowl!
Surely they want to get back in the game?

The Queen City Bowl was the working title.
Suck it, Cincinnati.

I bet.
The Bowl itself is going to have an easy time finding a title sponsor. There is enough heat to be another NC bowl game and a surge to sponsor the one we have. Bank of America, BB&T (Winston Salem), Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Bojangles, Honeywell, NASCAR, Duke Energy, MAACO, Meineke, Extended Stays, etc.
There will not be a lag in sponsorships like the New Mexico, Mobile or Camellia Bowls.

This should've been the name from the get-go. Now they can fix it.
Motor City Bowl
Music City Bowl
Queen City Bowl

The NASCAR bowl.... I have some visions of how that could play out.

Wasn't the Belk Bowl previously the Continental Tire Bowl and then the Meineke Car Care Bowl?
I do agree with some others that bowl games should never just have a corporate name... it should have a name that is interchangeable as sponsors come and go.

Why do Charlotte and Cincinnati have the same nickname? That’s weird, right?

Can't answer for Cincy but Charlotte was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen consort of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

At the beginning of the 19th century Cincinnati was an important shipper of products along the Ohio River. Based on its location, it was dubbed as the Queen City of the West.

So the city is named after a prostitute. Interesting.

Lol Queen Consort is a rank, meaning she has title but not power. The current husband of Elizabeth of England is also consort.

Well in this case, the Belk Bowl was never anything but a corporate creation. It never had a name that wasn't a corporate sponsor.
This is significant news, though. The Belk Bowl has established itself, it is in the SEC bowl rotation. So if they can't find a sponsor that can put up the same money, that might change.

I don't have the answer to that question, but did you know Charlotte, NC and Charlottesville, VA are both named for the same person, Queen Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz?

I think several of those simply won't have the money to do that. Food Lion and Harris Teeter are in retreat against competition. Bojangles closed a bunch of stores after expanding too far too fast. NASCAR was being floated a few years ago for something to sell after they thought it would be a good idea to hold less races in the South and more in the West and Northeast. Duke Energy is looking at build out to meet demand and clean up from their coal slurry mess. MAACO is the Harbor Freight of car painting and collision repair. Extended Stays is only in Charlotte because their tax breaks to be in Spartanburg, SC expired and they wanted more free money. The excuse was ultimately airfare costs to leave KGSP vs KCLT .... except that KGSP is almost always cheaper to fly out of. A more realistic list: GEICO, BofA, BB&T, Pepsi, Wegmans, NY Life, Lowe's.
