There aren't plans for most of these improvements. They still require funding from the general assembly or private fundraising. The renovations to the old convocation center will need to be completely privately raised, and will be a comprehensive indoor athletics facility - it's not just new paint, lights and bathrooms - the joint requires a major overhaul. Remember a lot of that list is a wish list for what JMU wants to do in the next few years. This is probably a 8-year plan.

Take the whole article with a grain of salt. It reports that JMU is going to replace the football turf this summer (that paragraph - traffic light, grace street, etc is all stuff that happened last summer).

I'm curious how that number was derived. Anyone else with insight?

The $127.5M includes the parking deck. Rough budget is $99.0M for the arena and $28.5M for the parking deck. Roads and infrastructure into new deck all part of that cost.

Thank you. The $28.5 mil cost for the parking deck must include the infrastructure cost as $19k per parking space ($28.5 mil divided by 1500, the reported capacity of the deck) would be super high.

You also have to factor in all the architect/engineering fee, permitting, whatever other consultants they used which on a job that size could easily be north of 12 million (combined for both the garage and arena). Parking decks are also a pain to build labor wise although i think i remember them doing this all precast but not sure about the ramps. The roads and infrastructure arent going to move the needle on this place (power, water, sewer are all within spitting distance of the site) you may have to up size some of the services but the guts are all there.

Construction wise...we always tell clients to budget $15k per parking space. So you add in the soft costs (architect/engineers/etc) and the infrastructure and $19k a parking space is probably about right...maybe a little on the high end. All depends on how they broke out the sitework costs.

Interesting stat. So the recently completed Chesapeake Ave Deck, per Breeze Article I just checked was 11.6M for 675 spaces, or 17.2K per space. Given the size of the east campus project 19K/space certainly seems plausible.

Do tell. So the old convo is going to be turned into the football practice facility/multi sport development center? What was the original intent of the old convo? It always looked to me that it would make a great swimming pool.

I’m not sure why that would make me happy. 30 suites seems like a large number. 2 suites seems like a very small number.
