Butch is no more guilty than the rest of the Athletic Department. It went on way before him. Butch's problem was that he allowed too many football players into the deal.

They have fixed that now since all the athletes have their own separate online sites for academics, academic communications, regular email, and segregated unlimited dining sites all over campus. Keeping the regular student body from coming into too much contact with a dumb athlete is the key element these days. Carolina has run different levels of curriculum for several decades.

There is the normal curriculum for about 75% of the students.
There is the Honors and Robertson Scholars curriculum for students they think are otherwise Ivy League capable. About 15% (Don't take a class with these ringers)
There is the athletic curriculum for decent athletes - about 7.5%
There is the remedial curriculum for those certified as learning disabled, add-hd, etc.
This is around 2%

Basically Carolina has four tracks and you have known how UNC works to know that.

Regular and honors students have little to no chance to ever encounter a dumb athlete in class. That's what UNC wants. In some ways this is very unethical, but it could be said to be a fair trade for using a dumb kid to make money for the University.

Carolina works on and believes in situational ethics. It's a relic of tidewater paternalism where the master of the plantation judged the people involved as well as the letter of the law and rendered judgement. If your child has any kind of academic issue you want him or her at UNC or UVA not State or VT.

Congrats to the Hokies. A dominating performance yesterday. And thanks to my wife whose birthday it was so I didn't watch the game. Doesn't seem like I missed much.
