This is revenue, but what about profit? You gotta spend money to make money.

The converse is not necessarily true, of course. The point is that most of these revenues are balanced out -- to the cent -- by expenses in the same books that report the revenues.

Despite the massive TV contracts of the P5, BYU still is #59 and UConn #61. Rest of top 67 are P5.

AAC #68-#72, #75, #77-#79, #85
MWC #73-74, #76, #80, #82-83, #86, #89, #92, #96-97
Top outside the P5 and pretentious 2-------RICE!!!! #81
Next is ODU at #84.

What about them? Ain't no dividends to be given out.

Nearly everyone is listed as a 501c3, and not for profit by law. They gotta spend it so it is paid out in bonuses, pays down building debt, or pays for maintenance somewhere possibly back to the school's general fund. It's like a church, gotta spend what you bring in.

How much of the revenue was because of all the money invested in the sports programs to begin with?

Also, if they can balance their books perfectly, as most report anyway, I wonder how much of the revenue and expenses are actually attributable to sports.

I’m surprised Cincy is a noticeable drop below the other top programs in the conference (and USF).

This is a drop below what I’ve seen reported from UC in the past. I assume it’s because this was the year we played our basketball season off campus at NKU. We didn’t get very much b-ball revenue at all in that year compared to normal. The new arena would bring a significant amount of revenue.

This is a drop below what I’ve seen reported from UC in the past. I assume it’s because this was the year we played our basketball season off campus at NKU. We didn’t get very much b-ball revenue at all in that year compared to normal. The new arena would bring a significant amount of revenue.

This, plus out FB team was 4-8 and attendance was awful. Show me 2018-19 when we were back in our renovated arena in hoops and our football team went 11-2 and won the Military Bowl.

These numbers look really weird.

E.g., FSU has a smaller financial pocketbook than Florida in every way - less conference money, less attendance at football games, etc.

So where is it getting $177m from? Did a T-Boone Pickens type donate $60m to the athletic department?

Makes no sense, as does the Kansas number.

FSU is typically lower. Maybe they raised a bunch of money for a coaches' buyout.04-cheers

There's no telling how much these numbers maybe skewed by new stadium or arena construction gifts.

This is why a moving 3-yr avg is a much better way to look at these numbers.

I'm sure capital campaigns have a huge impact on these #s. Some of the SEC numbers shift by 10-20 million year to year. I think Ole Miss was upwards of 110 million last year.

Different methodology from USA Today obviously.

Arkansas State is reporting only university accounts, not booster club.

I sort of suspected that but nailed it down when I got to the entry for total head coach salary expenditures (MEN) and the grand total was less than Blake Anderson's contract. So that's not counting booster club supplements to head coaches and assistant coaches or other outlays from the booster club.

The revenue "hole" is roughly the same size and the booster club's revenue.

Very useful data and appropriately is aligned with university revenues and outlays because those are of more interest in enforcing Title IX than third party organization revenues and expenditures.

and if you didn't make any, then you must not have spent any. Lol...

The converse is not necessarily true, of course. The point is that most of these revenues are balanced out -- to the cent -- by expenses in the same books that report the revenues.

The reporting guidelines state that expenses can not exceed revenue. Their reasoning is the bills have to be paid somehow, right? So how’d you pay them? If you use surplus revenues from prior years to cover current year shortfall then you should report those revenues in both years. You can pretty much throw the idea of “books” or “accounting” out the window with these numbers.

They shouldn’t. It explicitly states not to include capital campaign revenues or expenditures.

Third party payments to the school to cover salaries should be included. It doesn’t address if the payments are made directly to the coach by the third party.
