RE: Laughable Scores - 2019 Football - Week 12
0-10 Akron scored its first TD in 18 quarters - FBS’ longest drought since 2005.

Remember, they fired Terry Bowden who - after inheriting a 1-win program in 3 consecutive years - went to a MAC title game 2 years ago and beat a B1G West Champion (school’s first B1G win since 1898) last year.

That AD should be banned from touching any athletics program ever again.

Flipping back and forth between the MAC game, the Mack game and ESPNU which had the 2013 Georgia-Auburn game.

I guess had had blotted that Auburn game out of my memory. From 12 minutes to go, down 37-17, Aaron Murray scrambles for a TD on a 4th and goal from the 5 with 2 minutes left to give UGA a 1 point lead. On 4th and 18 for Auburn, the QB throws a bomb right into the hands of the UGA defender who was deeper than the Auburn receiver. Then another UGA defender knocks it out of his hands and into the hands of the Auburn receiver who scores on a 73 yard pass with 25 seconds remaining to make it 43-38. But Aaron Murray takes UGA to a 1st and 5 on the Auburn 20 with 3 seconds left. But doesn't get the TD on the last play.

Kent was a little less dramatic. Down 27-6 with 10 minutes to play, they converted a long drive for a TD, recovered an onsides kick and scored and then blocked a punt and scored. Getting the ball back again with 2 minutes left they drive down and kick a 44 yard FG at the buzzer.

Kent win clinches MAC East for Miami who is 2 up on 3 teams they have beaten with 2 games to play.

Mack's game (UNC-Pitt) wasn't very interesting. But then I see they just tied it with their 2nd 4th Q TD.

Pitt beats North Carolina 34-27 in OT.

Pitt is close to clinching one of those ACC divisions. Clemson is terrified.

4-6 UNC is now 28 points or something from being undefeated.

They were saying UNC was tied for the most one score games since 1936-8 out of 9. Its 9 out of 10 now. 2OT losses and the 1 point loss vs. Clemson-guess it was a good idea to go for 2 instead of OT.

I think Mack Brown is getting in the way of his team's success. Like inserting needless teaching moments or adding risk where it isn't appropriate. You can pull that stuff in college basketball; you have enough games and chances to get good wins that, if you grow and shape up, you can still make deep runs in the tournament. In CFB, you only get so many games where you can make the case for bowl-eligibility. In this current championship schematic, you really can only screw up once, or not at all for that track.

Not that UNC should be undefeated, but, they shouldn't have to be in a place where bowl eligibility hinges on beating NCST, either.

Well they were 2-10 last year. Gets hard to change that losing mentality.

Big 12 style of offense and defense do not work well in the ACC. I think his talent would have been better if he be head coach at UTRGV and help their team if they start football. It is Big 12 country for his coaching style to work.

Mack Brown was a successful coach in the ACC during the late 1980s to late 1990s. At his peak, he was a great coach and could coach successfully anywhere.

The problem with Mack is that, let's face it, he's old now, pushing 70, and thus probably past his prime. He still can coach, but anyone expecting the Mack of even 10 years ago is probably asking too much.

This is Mack's 42nd season as a college football coach of one kind or another. His first year was 1974. He was App State's head coach *36* years ago. He's probably just not as sharp as he used to be. Old age creeps up on you.

As a long-time follower of UNC, I'm pleased with the job grizzled veteran Mack Brown has done. The record is not good, but the effort, consistency and competitiveness give hope for next year. Carolina might finish 5-7 (it should beat Mercer but you never know) this campaign but an 8-4 season in 2020 is reasonable. I tend to admire the "old-timer" coaches more than I should — because my father loves them. But, and to be fair, such coaches at advanced ages do have limitations.

La. Tech receiving votes 7
Marshall 10

Marshall wins this game, it would eliminate C-USA a chance for a NY6 Bowl.

Texas HS football. Carroll 84, Lewisville 6 in the 1st round of the playoffs. But give credit to Lewisville, they won the 4th quarter 6-0 (yup it was 84-0 after 3 quarters).

I think it’s a trade-off with those coaches. You know he’s good for some improvements, but I suspect the killer instinct is gone. The frustrating part is the marked improvements; you can tell UNC can line up against maybe anyone and put up a good fight. They could beat anyone, too. But put it all together? Sustain it? It’s just not there.

You have something quite good, but, if you’re not used to better, you settle.

I have always liked Mack Brown, but IMO he is past his prime. I suspect the early success this season was the product of his being able to inject some hope and enthusiasm in the players, but I would bet it's not sustainable. It already hasn't sustained this season.

If I were UNC, I'd be shopping for a replacement right now as I suspect next year will be worse rather than better. Just over the hill.

Carolina football has been so mediocre for so long that to see close games and competitiveness is refreshing. Your points are well made.

My feeling is Mack probably doesn't want to be in Chapel Hill too long. I like that he has kind of reinvigorated the program to an extent, making it more (potentially at least) appealing to the whoever the next coach might be.

And yes, next year could be worse. But I tend to see 6-6 or 7-5 for 2020 (as opposed to what might be a 5-7 season this year, assuming the Heels beat Mercer and lose to NCST).

Agree with you on the question of sustainability.

My hope is that Mack stays there two more years and does well like Bill Snyder.

Full disclosure: My father got to know Watson Brown (MB's brother) and his wife very well back in the day (wonderful people). So Pops and I are biased toward Mack and want him to fare well.

Stunning in the fact that Lewisville use to be a powerhouse in Texas high school football.
