RE: Laughable Scores - 2019 Football - Week 12
Cincy wins 20-17.
What a sad result. We were better, we outplayed them. They literally never led until time expired.
Absurd loss.

The record is not good, but the effort, consistency and competitiveness give hope for next year. Carolina might finish 5-7 (it should beat Mercer but you never know) this campaign but an 8-4 season in 2020 is reasonable. I tend to admire the "old-timer" coaches more than I should — because my father loves them. But, and to be fair, such coaches at advanced ages do have limitations.
I have always liked Mack Brown, but IMO he is past his prime. I suspect the early success this season was the product of his being able to inject some hope and enthusiasm in the players, but I would bet it's not sustainable. It already hasn't sustained this season.
If I were UNC, I'd be shopping for a replacement right now as I suspect next year will be worse rather than better. Just over the hill.
My feeling is Mack probably doesn't want to be in Chapel Hill too long. I like that he has kind of reinvigorated the program to an extent, making it more (potentially at least) appealing to the whoever the next coach might be.
And yes, next year could be worse. But I tend to see 6-6 or 7-5 for 2020 (as opposed to what might be a 5-7 season this year, assuming the Heels beat Mercer and lose to NCST).
Agree with you on the question of sustainability.
My hope is that Mack stays there two more years and does well like Bill Snyder.
Full disclosure: My father got to know Watson Brown (MB's brother) and his wife very well back in the day (wonderful people). So Pops and I are biased toward Mack and want him to fare well.
Mack can close the deal on recruits. If he gets staff who properly evaluates them (and he really has to at UNC, unlike Texas where he could get almost anyone he wanted), he will raise the talent level. He isn't afraid to hire good assistant coaches.
He's past his prime, but he is top 10 all time in wins among major college coaches, past Woody and Bo. Might move to #7 with a couple more years coaching. He is within range of Lavell Edwards, Tom Osborne and Lou Holtz. Only the legends (Paterno, Bowden, Bear, Pop, Stagg) and Frank Beamer appear out of reach. And since Beamer has a bunch of wins at Murray St., Mack is actually tied for 9th with Beamer in FBS wins at 238.
"He isn't afraid to hire good assistant coaches."
If your point is accurate ... I have reason for hope with Mack. I kind of think you're correct.

The question is...will the close win stir the voters any?

not enough to help App St. Cincy and Memphis right now control their own destiny. Either one wins out, they are the G5 rep no matter what.

RE: Laughable Scores - 2019 Football - Week 12
I just checked the Cincy vs. USF stats.... a head-scratcher. USF dominated overall (I did not watch the game). The only thing I can figure its this: The USF kicker was 1 of 5. That is extremely unusual and, likely, the difference.
I'm glad Cincy won (on paper) but it seems the Bulls were the far better team and deserved the win. Regardless, UC moves on (modestly so, admittedly).
USF must rank among the best teams in the country with a losing record.

Louisville beats NC State 34-20.
I don't know if it's an upset or not, but the Louisville Kicker had probably one of the best throws I have ever seen from a kicker....

Total amateur hour on ABC. Keeping scores on the bottom, but no time and no down info in the last 4 minutes OU-Baylor.

Oklahoma wins .... 34-31.
Actually a good result for the Big 12. Expect Baylor to drop very little while Oklahoma may rise a couple spots.

except now the only possible playoff participant scenario- Baylor undefeated- is gone..... Big 12 is pretty much eliminated right now.

Boise must have been watching the scoreboard, leads 28-0 over UNM after 1 quarter.
