AAU expansion
“ Association of American Universities offers coveted invitations to Dartmouth, University of Utah and the University of California, Santa Cruz.”
Utah? Congrats. The Big Ten now has someone to pair with Colorado when they expand again.
Also nice to see Dartmouth get in and make the Ivy League whole.

RE: AAU expansion
Who all is a member from the SEC? It's just A&M, Missouri, UF, and Vandy, correct?

Those are the current four. AAU membership is by invitation rather than application. A couple/few are added every decade or so.
A lot of emphasis is placed on federal research dollars received, of which 80% go to medical schools and engineering prorams.
The University of Georgia has been a candidate for AAU membership for years, and supposedly has exceeded at least half the current members in each of the criteria variables with the exception of federal research dollars intake. Georgia has a Veterinary Medicine School (as several other SEC schools), but the state medical School in Augusta has been a separate unit in the system, and Georgia Tech has the state's prime engineering program.
While AAU is composed of academically elite universities, their real focus is lobbying Congress and federal offices for research grants The political dimension should not be understated, along with taking advantage of the labeling.

UGA was going to be my next guess for membership, but I didn't realize they don't have a medical school.
I'm not sure who else would be an obvious member, all of the other SEC schools are around 75th-150th in USNWR.

USNWR is worthless for a predictor of AAU potential. They measure undergraduate schools for the value of the education.
ARWU is your tool to use in assessing potential AAU status.

That’s even a stretch. 20% of the ranking is based entirely on opinion. Even more, there’s no real reason they weigh the other factors the way do or use those factors whatsoever. 7% is faculty salary...
