RE: Gavitt Tipoff Games
so tough to tell, given played Central Arkansas and Mt St Mary's.... Not trending well... Central Arkansas lost to Baylor by 44 and Duke by 51. Georgetown was up 13 with 10 minutes to go....
we'll learn a lot the next 8 days. play Penn St tonight, then Texas next Thursday and Duke/Cal next Friday.

RE: Gavitt Tipoff Games
Was very impressed by Marquette last night. In years past, that big hole early would have absolutely sunken the squad (and we have never done well in the Gavitt Games). This year's group, thus far, just feels and looks different. McEwen appears to have provided a legit secondary option behind Howard, and John was able to stay out of foul trouble for the duration of the game.
Butler, Marquette and DePaul with big wins for the Big East so far. We will need to steal the MSU game in hopes of winning the challenge (assuming Georgetown takes care of business against Penn State).

Yup, last 3 games have been tough, no doubt.
Interesting he didn't go back one prior game to 4/2/18 where Nova beat Michigan 79-62 in a game of significantly more importance. Gladly trade all 3 of those for that 1.

wait, Stever, did we agree on something???
nah, couldn't be........
hearing some folks talking about how that 2018 Nova team is right up there in best teams of all time....
I remember watching that tourney and thinking(and saying) that Nova's going to lose all these underclassmen.

well I guess my fears were well founded from what it sounds like(was out coaching youth basketball).
with how good the league is, it could be a long year for the Hoyas.

Yep. Disappointing. Losing by that margin surprised me. Yurtseven had another strong game but GU yielded 13 three-pointers. That might have been the difference.

Very disappointing Gavitt Games for the Big East, IMO. DePaul shocks everyone and blows out Iowa, but the losses by Providence (Northwestern) and Georgetown (Northwestern) were killer. Butler, DePaul and Marquette represented well. Villanova has done more than enough in recent years to have an off game against Ohio State, and Seton Hall nearly took out Michigan State last night. Creighton was an underdog at Michigan, so that was fine too.
Will be expecting better from Providence and Georgetown in OOC.

After seeing the Central Arkansas comp scores- not so shocked with Georgetown....
But Providence losing to Northwestern after flipping Merrimack beats Northwestern? That's horrible.

it's remarkable with Providence. I've long said I like Cooley as a coach. But man, Providence thru the years with him has had some utterly head scratching losses OOC.

pretty crazy... 5 guys that have now started in the NBA. From 2016-2017 throw in Hart, Arch and even Ochefu for a cup of coffee and we will clearly look at this era as our golden age. 8 guys that played in the league.
Back in 2018, Brunson and Bridges leaving was a given. Spellman, possible and Donte improbable (before the final game). Spellman leaving had a particularly bad impact on LY given his presence inside and ability to stretch the D. Donte, well he clearly could have helped Booth out in the back court having another guard that could breakdown the D. Hurt the team from a roster management perspective and possible would have given them the chance to make another deep run.
That said, ABSOLUTELY the right move for each and every one of them.

I remember thinking I was taking crazy pills when people were downplaying the talent on that team and their historical place. i think a lot of it came from P5 bias, but still. that was one of the most incredible basketball teams of all time. they had basically five starters shooting ~40% from three. I maintain that the absolute beatdown they put on everyone in the tournament was one of the driving forces to get the 3 point line pushed back.

they drop a horrible ooc loss every year like clockwork. it's painful to see them underachieve every year with that talent. that team this year is loaded beyond belief and they still can't figure it out

I was expecting a georgetown loss, they've looked horrific in every game so far, and I thought the creighton game was a toss-up. the only really big disappointments were providence and nova. nova i can forgive, but i'm getting very tired of providence

it's so strange because they underachieve in OOC play, but then come conference play if anything they overachieve.
