But that wasn't how the game played out. We were up by 19 with 9 minutes to go. We were outscored by 2 points a minute after dominating for 31. That's a wasted opportunity. It might still look good on the NCAA resume (hopefully we don't need one because we win the CAAT), but for me, it was one of the most painful losses I can remember in any sport.
Maybe one day I can add a silver lining to this dark cloud, but not yet.
I'm not going to discredit your feelings or anyone else's. It sucks.
I felt like absolute garbage after this game. I literally felt sick to my stomach. But I couldn't help but think how bad this felt to the coaching staff and players.
While I do think this one really hurts, there are many other games that I still look back on and still hurt really bad. This one is in the forefront so it's pretty easy to label this one as the most painful.
I think it's important to put some perspective to it, though. This game doesn't eliminate JMU from making the tournament or knocking them out or preventing them from winning anything else in the future. This game was definitely a wasted opportunity. But at what cost? Are we going to lose a shot at the NCAA's because of this loss? No. Are we going to lose a shot at winning the CAA autobid? No. Would a win have locked us in for a NCAA bid? No. Would we have been ranked if we won? Maybe.
As huge as this win would have been, in the long season it may not mean that much. They still have to win the rest of the game OOC. Losing out would make this win meaningless. Winning out doesn't make this loss as bad. No committee is going to eliminate us from consideration for wasting a shot at beating #8 Maryland.
With that being said, there are a few games that come to mind that still hurt after all these years.
2007 JMU football versus App State. All we needed was a field goal in red zone and we beat App State in their house. I will never forget the sound from the App State fans when Sullivan fumbled the ball. That ended our season.
2008 JMU football versus Montana. Semi final game. Landers goes down with an injury and Montana wins the game. I felt like it was the strongest JMU team since 2004 and our season was over.
I just hope that those hurting right now can look at this loss in a big picture. Our season isn't over. This loss should be a lesson to our staff and to the players that they can beat any team in the country, but they have to play well all game long or the first three quarters are meaningless. Perhaps this is the kick in the butt they need. Only time will tell. Time will heal ...maybe not entirely but it will heal. For now it hurts real bad, but we could be looking at this as the moment this team truly discovered their potential.
