RE: WBB vs Maryland, 11/13
While the loss sucks, Coach O admits that this loss really hurt. They had the number 8 team in the country on the ropes and let it get away. Credit the coach for taking the blame, but it means nothing if they don't learn from it.
The good news is it's a "good loss" if there is such a thing. This won't hurt our chances at an at-large but a win absolutely would have helped. We could have either been ranked or pretty darn close to being ranked.
I certainly won't say the sky is falling, because it most certainly is not. Doesn't make this loss hurt any less. We were the better team and we let them off the hook.
My hope is that coaches and players learn from this one and I hope it hurts. This is a learning moment in many ways. It should give them confidence that on any given night they can beat anyone, but also that they need to be focused for 40 mins.
They will be fine and may even be better after this loss. There are plenty of other games to go and the season has barely begun.

OTP - nobody is whining. Take a chill pill. Frustration posted in here is only because all of us know what could have been. The sky is not falling, and nobody said that.

If we would have been back and forth with Maryland and lost by two, fine, it's a "good loss." It would be upsetting because of the missed opportunity. But that wasn't how the game played out. We were up by 19 with 9 minutes to go. We were outscored by 2 points a minute after dominating for 31. That's a wasted opportunity. It might still look good on the NCAA resume (hopefully we don't need one because we win the CAAT), but for me, it was one of the most painful losses I can remember in any sport.

Maybe one day I can add a silver lining to this dark cloud, but not yet.

I'm not going to discredit your feelings or anyone else's. It sucks.

I felt like absolute garbage after this game. I literally felt sick to my stomach. But I couldn't help but think how bad this felt to the coaching staff and players.

While I do think this one really hurts, there are many other games that I still look back on and still hurt really bad. This one is in the forefront so it's pretty easy to label this one as the most painful.
I think it's important to put some perspective to it, though. This game doesn't eliminate JMU from making the tournament or knocking them out or preventing them from winning anything else in the future. This game was definitely a wasted opportunity. But at what cost? Are we going to lose a shot at the NCAA's because of this loss? No. Are we going to lose a shot at winning the CAA autobid? No. Would a win have locked us in for a NCAA bid? No. Would we have been ranked if we won? Maybe.
As huge as this win would have been, in the long season it may not mean that much. They still have to win the rest of the game OOC. Losing out would make this win meaningless. Winning out doesn't make this loss as bad. No committee is going to eliminate us from consideration for wasting a shot at beating #8 Maryland.
With that being said, there are a few games that come to mind that still hurt after all these years.
2007 JMU football versus App State. All we needed was a field goal in red zone and we beat App State in their house. I will never forget the sound from the App State fans when Sullivan fumbled the ball. That ended our season.
2008 JMU football versus Montana. Semi final game. Landers goes down with an injury and Montana wins the game. I felt like it was the strongest JMU team since 2004 and our season was over.

I just hope that those hurting right now can look at this loss in a big picture. Our season isn't over. This loss should be a lesson to our staff and to the players that they can beat any team in the country, but they have to play well all game long or the first three quarters are meaningless. Perhaps this is the kick in the butt they need. Only time will tell. Time will heal ...maybe not entirely but it will heal. For now it hurts real bad, but we could be looking at this as the moment this team truly discovered their potential.

The season is a long season, but if we don't go on a winning streak in OOC it will come down to a short season (3 games) in March again. We very likely/possibly don't have any At-large teams left on our schedule so we need to beat the teams we have. The past 3 years have shown running up the wins in CAA play will not overshadow OOC play for an at-large bid. We have the talent and experience to be an at-large team. Just need to do it.

If I think back at Wednesday, it would hurt. But I'm beyond that at this point. Let's start winning and get that at-large bid.

No offense, but I think its a little bit of an overreaction to say there are no other at-large teams left on our schedule. First of all, it's too early to even make that assessment. Secondly, St Johns would probably take issue with that as they are quite good. Lastly, many people have been talking (Coach O especially) about how challenging our OOC schedule is. Now all of a sudden we lose to Maryland and the schedule is crap? Sorry, not buying it.
Do we need to win out? No. But we do need a very strong showing, especially OOC.
