RE: Game 11: Towson

Okay, on the last drive of the game we actually played with a sense of urgency (albeit misplaced because we were down by 21), we were quick to the line, quick to run the play, and throwing quick darts downfield (and not just side-to-side like usual). We actually moved the ball better than we had all game and the only thing that stopped the drive was three penalties for 45 yards all on one play (with 0:03 left on the clock). So my question is: why didn't we play like that all game???? Serious question. I wish the coaching staff would give a serious answer. Now that was a go-go offense!

There may have been some of that and there may also have been some of Towson playing second or even third teamers. Conversely, since we were exclusively passing at that point, if we had been having incompletions then that would have stopped the clock and slowed the game down. A more likely scenario for Towson to speed up the game would have been for them to stop us quickly (as they had done all game) and then regain the ball and run out the clock by running it themselves. Plus, when they forced that fumble just minutes from the end, that was the action of a team that still cared and not of a team just hurrying the game to conclusion.

Even more telling, though, is that it was not the actions of Towson on defense that dictated what we did those last minutes but, rather, the actions of the Tribe on offense. To repeat what I said above: we had a sense of urgency, we were quick to the line, quick to run the play, and throwing quick darts downfield. The throws were down the field and not the sideways time-wasters that we had been throwing all game. If we had just been running the same tired plays then we would have had the same results (Towson was still tackling and wasn't going to let anyone just jog into the endzone just to burn clock).

The takeaway from this is that I would love to see a similar offense against Richmond. Call it "go-go", call it "hurryup", call it whatever you want, but I would love to see a little more speed and more urgency to set the defense back on its heels. (and, like many others, I would like to see our defense play to its strengths and stop playing so far off the ball). Richmond is a winnable game.
