We get another home game this afternoon. This time against Abilene Christian. I do not know much about them except they were a 15 seed in the tournament last year after going 27-6. They graduated some of their scorers from that team. It appears to be a young team. They beat up on a non DI so not a lot of takeways. Peyten Ricks is likely the focus as he played a big part in scoring last season. Kohl was their top guy in their only game.

To me this is a winnable game against a decent opponent, with it being at home you need to hold serve. We have played a decent Temple team and a bad Niagara team, whereas Abilene has only played a non-DI. We should be more ready for this game and the natural speed of the game. Butler will have his work cut out against the 7 footer in Kohl, but beyond him, they dont have a ton of length/height so we should be able to be the bigger team and need to use that to our benefit.

Vegas has us as 6.5 point favorites. Tipoff is 2pm

ACU- 63
DU- 68

Obviously scoring has not been an issue thus far. Shot 62% in the first half and only led by 5. Defense is struggling to stop ACU. Both teams playing hard.

U12 timeout we lead 61-60

RE: Abilene Christian
Walton tied it with 20 seconds left and blocked a layup at the buzzer to force overtime tied at 77-77. You only had 5 second half fouls. It's 83-83 with 46.4 seconds left in overtime, and Abilene Christian has the ball. You're in the double bonus, and you have 3 timeouts left.

Edit: Walton committed a turnover with 3:07 left, missed 2 free throws with 3:02 left, and committed a turnover with 1:55 left, but he was the hero. Juric stole the ball with 28 seconds left, which was late enough to let Drexel hold for the final shot. They didn't used any of their last 3 timeouts. Wynter was guarded, so Walton made a 3 from the top of the key with 2 seconds left. Maybe the camera were expecting Abilene Christian to use their timeout, because they missed their shot from their own half that didn't come close. They showed where the shot went, but they missed showing where the shot was taken. Drexel won 86-83. Abilene Christian shot field goals 2-7 in overtime, and you shot 3-3. Walton led you with 22 points, and he had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Butler had 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Wynter had 8 points and 6 assists, but he made 2 of 7 field goals, and had more turnovers (4) than rebounds (3). Last season he had 1.91 times as many rebounds and turnovers. I know that ratio isn't a statistic, but I wanted to show that he did worse than usual in both categories. Payten Ricks led all scorers with 29. Clay Gayman scored 21 and made 8 of 9 field goals.

Heaved from pretty much between foul line extended toward the Drexel bench and top of the arc.

Hell of a game.....haven't seen the box yet, but I suspect a major gap in TO's and fair number of missed FT by DU, yet still took it to OT and won.

Edit 24 to 9 TOs...... Shot 75% from the line vs. 70% for Texas Abilene

DU had a 45-22 advantage on the boards. TexAbi's 7ft. Center wasn't much of a factor.

RE: Abilene Christian
Walton bailed us out for sure with that shot. He was open but definitely wasnt what we should have been looking for there. Our defense was atrocious. We seemingly had 1 stop in the 2nd half and that was the last play of the game. Our firt two games showed a much improved defense, so today felt much more like the past couple seasons. Hopefully we dont revert back to being one of the worst defensive teams in the country. With 24 turnovers, we were fortunate to leave victorious. This is one you enjoy the victory and move on. A win over a team that danced last year. It is still a good victory. Glad that we dominated the boards against a smaller team. The balance was nice, it looked to me that Spiker was really trying to get players floor time to get them right and truly evaluate what we have, similar to what Denise does in the OOC.

For Evan not sure where you were watching it, but I assume Flo was using the drexeldragons.tv stream and the camera was fine on the last shot. The only strange thing so far with our streams is they have been all over on how to show the time and score. Against Niagara it was screenshots of our scoreboard, which was awful looking. Today they had their own little scoreboard superimposed, like most places, but it had Drexel on top despite being the home team. Small details they are clearly still hashing out.

Full court press was a new look and resulted in one 10-second violation as well as taking some time off the shot clock. Deeper bench is a nice change as well.

RE: Abilene Christian
The small gathering at the DAC today got to see a really exciting, yet really frustrating game. In the first half, Drexel really took advantage of the ACU fouls by scoring from the foul line. Drexel lead by as much as 9 in the first half and even at halftime when Drexel was up by 5, I really felt that Drexel was the better team and would pull away and win handily if they could just cut down on the turnovers. They were dominating ACU on the boards and out shooting them by a considerable margin.

2nd half was extremely frustrating as they let ACU not only get back into the game but took a 5 point lead late. Dan, you say that the defense was atrocious, but I really didn't see the defense as the problem. The problem today was the sloppy offense, and not taking care of the basketball. Actually it was Drexel's defense, especially some amazing stops from Butler that allowed Drexel to get back to the game. ACU lead 73-68 with 6:15 to go, and the score stayed the same until Walton's 2 FT's with 4:41. The ESPN win probability chart gave ACU a 78.4% chance of winning the game under 5 minutes to play. So ACU scored just 2 points in the final 6:15, and I will give Drexel's lockdown defense credit for allowing them to get back into the game despite continuing to turn the ball over.

Evan, good points on Walton. with the last few possessions He really struggled late in the game, but bailed himself out with the miracle shot at the end.

One question I have is regarding last second offenses. Drexel did this during the last play in OT, and ACU was the same way at the end of regulation. Why are teams afraid to try to run a play in the final seconds. What is it with this run the clock down to 5 seconds and attempt a miracle 3 point shot? Drexel has been doing this for many years, and it almost always backfires. Why can't they run the office and try to get a shot inside and at least try to draw a foul?

I just watched the replay of the final minutes of the game and the camera work was poor. They seemed to show shots of the crowd at very strange times. Very amateurish. And considering how few people were at the game today, they probably shouldn't have been showing the crowd at all.

My take from where I sat today and saw was that there was something else planned for the final play that AC took away and Walton's shot was the only thing left available given the clock.

Youre team is showing a lot of grit so far.

That will pay dividends come winter

Thanks. I see a lot of talent and depth on the court right now. As I said on an earlier thread, health is the key. I also think that there is also addition by subtraction by no longer having the egos and ball hogs of Isabel and Harper. They were very talented scorers, but I don't think Drexel could win with them. Right now, the biggest issue is the sloppy play on offense which has led to 20 turnovers/game. That has to get fixed if this team is going to compete.

I have never seen Spiker jump so high when that happened. That energy was certainly great to see, because plays like that are important to the team. The deeper play of the bench was nice and felt much like Denise's use of personnel in that he is trying to see what can work. I actually felt like he was willing to lose this game in trying to get everyone minutes. Having access to 9-10 players for any given game would be quite the luxury, so I definitely applaud him for trying to make it work.

Turnovers are definitely frustrating. And they were plentiful for sure. Valuing the ball matters. We were making some right cuts and backdoors, but we definitely forced the ball where it was not available. Almost felt yesterday Bruiser-like where we made passes in the offense out of habit as opposed to actually seeing what was available in front of them which led to silly turnovers.

Defensively we need to be more physical. We gave up far too many easy buckets. We did get some blocked shots which were nice and timely, but our shifting and closeness on defense allowed way too much space and easy open shots. They hit them yesterday, as decent teams will. Several times we shifted and got burned on the baseline for layups. So our defensive switches and rotations certainly needs cleaned up by the time we hit CAA play or the guard heavy CAA teams will exploit us. Still a very nice win, and a game we would have lost the past few years. Plenty to take and build from this game. A lot of promise for this team

Depth is absolutely a nice thing to have and it appears we have it, but plenty to clean up to be productive depth. If we can get Kurk, Doles and Green going and being productive consistently will make this team really good. Butler is absolutely cooking for us, and everyone else producing around him can make this team really tough to gameplan against. I wouldnt mind we have him actually post up more and make teams actually have to try and use bigs as bigs.

His 14.3 rebounds are third in Division I, and there are 353 teams.
