RE: Official NIU vs UNI game day thread
Missing Daow and McCarty hurt us (and I assume Lee, although I haven't seen him play yet, so who knows), they clobbered us on the boards.
I know everyone loves to just look at stats and like to blame the lack of assists/quality of offense on German, but I don't see it that way. I thought German played very well, he seemed to have improved his overall defense. Yes, NIU started their run when German was out, but that's because the overall D energy picked up and they got some fast breaks, I don't think it was because German was out.
Agree with others that the lack of development by James (yes, only after 1 game in) is bothersome, he does some nice things, but can't put it all together.

German did not shoot well. He will shoot much better as season wears on. Lacey James will have a few better scoring days but he is as good as he will ever be as a player. He doesn’t have good hands and he shuffles his feet on every move. He also starts his shot from his waist instead of keeping the ball high.

4 assists on 22 made field goals. Montgomery's biggest downfall is his inability to recruit or develop a point guard.

So frustrating to see Lacey have control of the ball in rebounding situations and just get it so easily taken away

He’s a very nice kid who needs to learn some basketball skills. Unfortunately, he does not have a coach who is able to teach him.

German had at least 3 shots that rolled around the rim and just came out, I'm not worried about his shooting, he'll be fine.
Steven has a very valid point on the PG, it's such a need.
All that being said, I didn't see anything yesterday that said this team can't develop into a team that can not suck in the MAC this season.

That says something right there that the goal is to "not suck".

The only thing Id like to see from German is just a few less shots where it is very early in the shot clock and he is about 5 feet beyond the arc. I totally understand why he does it, it might be the best look in the entire set, but I do wonder if it can create a sense of desperation and panic among the team as a whole. That kind of shot selection I wonder could be contagious too.

The MAC is somewhat interesting this year, the top teams are nowhere near as good as last year with possible exception of BG. The top 5 or 6 though is pretty solid. Huskies are probably in that middle bunch followed by a pretty bad bottom quarter. The MAC may be a little deeper at the top than some people had envisioned. No great teams, just about a half dozen solid teams (i.e. top 90 to top 125)
