RE: Official NIU @ Toledo Game Thread
We beat Toledo.
Always something to be proud of.
Toledo is the team with the best overall record against NIU.
Well done NIU football.

RE: Official NIU @ Toledo Game Thread
Tale of the tape:
NIU:
Total yards: 444 (222 passing, 222 rushing)
Harbison: 32 carries, 158 yards, 1 TD
Childers: 7/9 passing, 71 yards, 3 TD; 5 carries, 57 yards, 2 TDs
Bowers: 15/26, 193 yards, TD
Daniel Crawford: 3 catches, 46 yards, TD
Turnovers: 0
Penalties: 3-24
Toledo:
Total yards: 508 (300 passing, 208 rushing)
Seymore: 19 carries, 133 yards; 4 catches, 24 yards
Peters: 26/38 passing, 300 yards, 3 TDs
Mitchell: 6 catches, 125 yards, 2 TDs
Turnovers: 2

No NIU turnovers, and few penalties. Much more discipline from this team as the year goes on.

One kinda turnover, the fumbled punt.

A huge thank you to Toledo's coaches for not running more. At times I was like what the heck are they doing. Much appreciated.

The good news though is that EMU and WMU aren’t much better so NIU will finish the season playing the three worst defenses it has faced all season.
To the eye test, yes...
Only Buffalo and Ohio have given up less points than WMU and they've only played 9 games, WMU has played 10.
In 10 games, they have given up 263 points...two of those games were P5's. They are the 2nd best defense (statistically) in the MAC. They have their problems, but they can also play pretty big when it matters.

I have a dumb question. Is there something about Hammock opposing coaches dont like? Every time I see Hammock shake hands after a game, the other coach treats him like he does not exist.

That fumbled punt is a turnover in my book. It gave Toledo the ball in the red zone and an easy score.

It was bizarre. It maybe could be described as a sort ball punch but not thrown like the normal short jab most guys throw when trying to knock the ball out. This was a full right cross with ko intentions. It was sort of near the ball...idk. Just bizarre.

RE: Official NIU @ Toledo Game Thread
I wonder if maybe Cole was doing a simulated punch. It looked like the Toledo player lost his balance falling backward. I think Cole threw an air punch kind of as a mock like "look what my powerful punch did to take you down" Much like a giant tripping and then someone standing over them with their foot resting on their chest to give the impression they were the ones to take them down. A WWE-like punch with no intention of landing. If true, still bad optics!

Defense played pretty disciplined throughout. The Linebackers will be better with more experience under their belt. McKie got burned a couple of times. But typically he's pretty good, so I'm not worried. Dillon Thomas came to play, I'm excited to see what he will bring in the future. He will pair nicely with Devin Haney next year, giving us two lengthy corners.
I like the offense, especially the run blocking on the line. Young Zschernitz finished out some good run blocks, not bad for a true freshman. And lastly, I liked that Eidsness mixed in Childers at the right times. More of this, and we will be back to our winning ways.
Zschernitz kid played well in his 1st start. I really think he's going to be a good one!

OL "Z', being a ex wrestler, who I believe finished #1 or #2 in Wisc. state championships, provides balance, agility and power. With size and experience he may turn out to be a starter for NIU in the future. JMHO.
