UT Receives DOE Grant For Solar Research
The U.S. Department of Energy awarded The University of Toledo $5.7 million for two solar energy technology research projects. Both projects involve the University collaborating with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and First Solar, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of solar cells and a company that originated in UToledo laboratories.

The Department of Energy also announced an award of $3.5 million to Colorado State University to work with UToledo, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, First Solar and the University of Illinois at Chicago on a project to improve the voltage produced by cadmium-telluride-based solar cells. The amount of the award in this project going to The University of Toledo is approximately $1.2 million. UToledo’s leader on this project is Dr. Michael Heben, UToledo professor of physics and McMaster Endowed Chair.

RE: UT Receives DOE Grant For Solar Research
and the rest of the story

Quote:Kaptur, who is chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, said she has been fighting to bring this funding to the area.

pork pork....

Well, better our pork than someone else's pork.

The cost share on the $3.5/$1.2, is $1 million. Not sure how UT and CSU divy that up nor if it is reimbursable.

Kptur's site says the other is $4.5 million. Cost share on that grant is $1.2 million.

She got a little chow for Eaton Corp $3 million. That gerrymandered snake-by-the-lake worked out pretty good for the good guys.

Not so sure why you would be so sour on this, pork or not, that money was going to be awarded somewhere, why not here at UT to support faculty, staff, students and institutional costs? Plus benefits to spending in Toledo community.

Not so sure why you see every bit of additional information as "sour." It's just information. Grown ups do this.

As for the "pork," your presumption that it goes somewhere, is not correct. Kaptur clearly stated, her intent was to "get some" for her district. That's not open bidding. It's pork. It's federal pork. It's possible to not be pork. It's possible for universities, even private companies of which a good chunk of this is going to pay for their own research and reap the benefits. I'm fine with UT getting this research investment. Eaton, less so.

Universities compete for these grants. Kaptur may announce it, but she has no ability to to influence scientists who rank DOE submissions in terms of their quality. This isn't some bridge that may have dubious merit. I think it's great that we have one of the world's best group of solar energy researchers.
