RE: Bigger Upset?
My gut reaction was UVA and it's not close, but the more I think about it I'd say it's close but still UVA. Gotta compare going in to it though since we only have hindsight on one. If it happens and then UVA goes on to have an awful year not even making the tournament and JMU has a great season and wins the CAA then I'd say it was the bigger upset at the time but obviously in hindsight ended up much smaller.

Just adding the clarifier in bold. That 2010 VT team was Top 15, won ACC title game & were 11-2 heading into Orange Bowl. Was the 8th largest point spread upset the last 25 years in college football. If JMU upset UVA would that be in the Top 8 going back the last 25 years in basketball?

That was my thought process as well. I imagine a top 15 Bball team loses to a mid major a few times a year, I think there is only one other FCS vs FBS upset ever that is even comparable to the VT upset. I'll note that UVA being the defending champs and JMU being a bad mid major adds another degree to the Bball upset, but I think I have to go with VT.

But we're not talking about just a 'mid-major'. We're talking about a mediocre-at-best mid-major. Last year I'm pretty sure there were several D2 teams ranked ahead of us on Massey. NE (top 100 right now) upsetting UVA is one thing, but a team hovering around 250 is completely different. I agree that it's easier to get an upset in basketball, between sheer number of games, length of the game, ability for one hot hand to overcome good defense, and number of players, but we're still talking about a gap of nearly 250 spots and a projected point difference of almost 40. The gap in rankings (assuming things stay even relatively close to last year) is nearly twice as wide as it was for VT.

Anyway, if we score 30 I'll be surprised...

RE: Bigger Upset?
i may revise my postion. the uva syracuse was ugly. uva didnt even score 50 points. syracuse only scored 35. syracuse had 5 points with 9 minutes to go in the 1st half and were only down 8. sure, maybe, ok, could be "pack line", but i think syracuse is just bad offensively.

dukes over uva would still be a huge upset, but i am not sold on uva.
