It was an absolute downpour for 4/6 games.

Without beating the dead horse that's already been mentioned, we're one of the few teams in the country that counts butts in the seats vs tickets sold/given away.

This past Saturday in Statesboro, we had both lower bowls at about 90% capacity and the upper deck about 30% full. We claimed 15k. In contrast, you could nearly count each individual person in the stands during Georgia State's game against South Alabama. They claimed also claimed 15k.

No clue why we do it that way when the rest of the conference doesn't.

It was also raining for a portion of the South Alabama game. Attendance wasn't great for that game, but most people that were there stayed under the covered seats for the majority of the game, even when it cleared up in the second half.

Not sure why GS gets to use rain as an excuse, but GSU does not.

Just going off your post, but you cant compare GSU to GS. GS had 3 games that rained the entire time (and 2 of those were heavy downpours). There is nowhere for most fans to take cover. The area under the mid deck is strictly for ticket holders and there is no way to watch from the concourse (even that is mostly exposed and offers no protection from the weather). A lot (including myself) have to drive several hours in order to get there and it's just not practical or safe to try and drive in those conditions for no tailgating and to get soaked to your bones when you can sit at home and watch on TV. Also, a lot of those games came after some bad losses. We just couldn't get any momentum this season. It was bad, pathetic actually (even I only made 2 home games this year and I usually make all of them). But if you look at our average over the years (even bad FCS years) we aren't concerned about 1 outlier. If this happens over the next 2 years, then we have a problem. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.
You mean like the three heavy downpour cold weather night home games we had? LOL

Because when it rains and Georgia Southern only has 10,000 people show up, Georgia Southern reports 10,000 people. When it rains and Georgia State only has 1,000 people show up, Georgia State reports 12,500 people.

Lol, this! Unless they had 14,500 people hiding under covered seating, there was no way in the world that they had 15,000 people there.

As we've all already said, Southern counts butts in the seats while State (and everyone else) counts tickets sold/given away. So if State allocates 6,000 tickets to students, has 4,000 season ticket holders, allocates 5,000 to corporate givings, and literally no one shows up, they can and will report 15,000 in attendance. That's not a knock on State, majority of FBS teams do this. I wish we would.

Asked David Cutler, our assistant AD and Ops manager, about why we report our attendance differently from other FBS teams and if it could hurt us negatively when it comes to bowl season and being chosen for ESPNU games. His answer (and I'm paraphrasing) was basically: "Why lie? Why be one of those schools? Reporting accurate numbers shows us where we need to improve in ticket promotions and sales and what teams on our schedule do and don't sell well. Also, the bowl committees and ESPN broadcasters aren't dumb. They are present at our games and at our conference mates' games and can see the difference in our attendance versus theirs."

I mentioned to him that Ben Moore and the gang were using their higher reported attendance average in their smack talk pre-Georgia State game. He said he couldn't care less what some fans on Twitter were saying. They are wrong.

If you're a bowl, I'd be interested in tickets sold, not butt's in seats.
Exactly. Bowls are in the business of selling tickets. Unless its a NY6 who cares about attendance. Cameras just will not pan up to the crowd.

Corporate bulk ticket sales to boost attendance numbers don't translate to bowl ticket sales.
Bowl allotment is filled like that all the time. Sold is sold.

Maybe UTA could step up and revive football so that we would have 4.

Or maybe UTA could make sure they aren't middle of the pack in the only revenue sport they play.

UTA has been top 3 in men's basketball attendance every year since they have joined the SBC. Most years they are number 2 behind Louisiana.

App should have built a 30K dome years ago. Unfortunately that requires forward thinking and fundraising expertise. Something we didn't have until recently.

Yeah the scenic mountain schools should never build domes.

It's not just that.

NDSU has a dome right now and it makes expanding their stadium a real ordeal. Though to be fair their November and December weather is worse than Boone's.

So maybe a couple schools have that situation. And you're right, it makes expansion impossible. Think Idaho.

Easy to say for you guys who don't have to endure 3-4 hrs of cold, wind, rain and sometimes sleet & snow. Those Chamber of Commerce days are great, but it's the others that kill us and we've had a string of those the past 3 years. Even on the non-precipitation days after mid October, once the sun drops behind the West Stands temps plummet. Tried to explain to Doug Gillin the reason season tickets are such a hard sale at App is because a LOT of people wait until Thursday to see what the weather is going to be.

Guess you could say App really has a bunch of "fair weather" fans.

I'll see myself out. Thank you.

That statement is pretty funny. I'm sure Doug gillin needs you to explain season ticket sales to him.

Agreed. Never cover up a great scenic view around a stadium with a dome.

I go to the game to watch the game. If it is uncomfortable it would be so much better with a dome. I can enjoy the view on the drive in and the walk to the stadium.

It’s pretty obvious, Georgia Southern counts attendance accurately. Butts in seats. Anybody who knows anything about this or who has watched Belt football or attended games in person knows the likes of Georgia State, Coastal, LA Monroe and South Alabama among others inflate numbers. Ask App fans, they have been there and know this. Just saying.

South Alabama counts tickets sold, or have you been sleeping? They do not inflate the number of tickets sold.
