Finally saw the game
And it was pretty bad, yeah. I won't rehash what everyone else has already said.
I can't tell how much of this current state is talent and how much is coaching. While coaching may be an issue there are clearly talent deficiencies at offensive line, pass rushing end and linebacker. The latter is of course majorly affected by injures but it's still disturbing to see such a huge dropoff after the starters. The CMU offensive coordinator did a great job of isolating our linebackers and taking advantage of them.
The offensive line, holy smokes did they get manhandled. That was child abuse. As i have noted elsewhere, there's a numbers problem at O-line with only 11 players available come January, and those are comprised largely of older guys who don't play and freshmen. Coach really, really needs to bring in some transfers to shore up the line or the offense is going nowhere.
While I generally liked Carey but the talent deficiencies reflect poorly on his regime. It's hard to believe this team wins again in 2019 with such a depleted roster. Coach Hammock deserves a chance to get his players into the program and develop a team that reflects his vision. I am hopeful for a 6-6 season next year to begin the climb out of the basement.

Thanks 81 for a reasonable and realistic viewpoint. We were hurt in the OLine when Roberts left for FSU. He has started every game. Just another guy here or there makes a big difference for us. BTW, no one mentions the OLine when a team wins and everyones happy. Then it's how great the QB is or the RB is fantastic. When a team loses they look at Oline right away.

While this O-line isn’t the greatest, an unbalanced offense makes them look far worse. A guy like Lynch can make any O-line look amazing. Even dual threat guys like Hare and Maddie keep D lines from being overly aggressive. But become one dimensional like under Childers and now Bowers and O-lines look worse than they are.

We also don't have anybody in the backfield that can cut back and find the big hole and take it to the house, or get 40 yards at least. Harbison isn't fast enough, and Nettles barely plays.

RE: Finally saw the game
Excellent point Rabid. The DL can pin its ears back and go after Bowers like CMU did yesterday. The offensive coaches and players panicked and tried to force throws when they had plenty of time to take what the defense gave them. The offense could have gotten us back into the ballgame by throwing short quick passes. We should have emphasized first downs and drove down the field. The three missed FGs by CMU were enough to get us back in the game if we didn't panic. Instead, we threw three picks and had no chance to get back into the game.
