Why the MAC has to have 12 members
For years the question in the MAC was would it be better off as an 8 or 10 team conference for recruiting than the 13 members it regularly had in FB.

If you look at membership of midwestern D1 conferences back in 2010 the case would be the MAC has too many members.

2010
MAC (13)
B1G (11)
MVC (10)
Horizon (10)

The complaint also was in basketball where the MAC was splitting the autobid 12 ways while the MVC was splitting it 10 and Horizon at one point 8 ways when Loyola and Butler were in it.

Post realignment that isn't really the case anymore. If the MAC was any smaller in membership it would be no bigger than the Horizon or MVC and lose its size advantage in olympic sport saturation.

2020
B1G (14)
MAC (12)
Horizon (11)
MVC (10)

The MAC now looks just the right size for its region as a G5 conference.

The average D1 conference size with the latest upgrades is now right around 11.15 members. The average D1 conference size in 1999 was about 9.8. The MAC is not the bloat that it once was perceived to be.

Adding schools in the right place might help for travel purposes. Illinois State and Indiana State could help balance the MAC. When you have 6 Ohio schools and 3 Michigan schools do make it look bad and a favortism to both states over the others.

I agree in the unlikely event someone was to leave the MAC. Illinois St improved their stadium a few years ago and is ready to go for MAC play.

I wouldn’t say 12 is a must. If they lose 1 they pursue what the AAC is trying to do and host a title game with just 11 members.

If they lose 2 they hold tight at 10.

With that said, no one is really a flight risk to leave any time soon.

Exactly. I'd like to see the MAC at 10 members.
