If they get a NY6 bowl that's the type of team they would have to play, not bad teams like USF, Texas St, North Texas, Tulsa, etc.

Okay, and they'd be playing in a NY6 bowl so...

Wasn't SMU's fault they underperformed.

What surprised me about Temple is just not how bad they looked on the field, but players were outing other players after the game, the locker room was just a mess. Not a good situation.

Agree.
Television coverage and endorsements are also lacking.
Then again, that has been the situation over the past two decades.
Things have gotten better since 2003.
Two NY6 appearances for the MAC.
MAC has been the coaches cradle: Nick Saban, Urban Meyer.... Dave Doeren, PJ Fleck etc
Without structural changes, we can wish to get to the next level, but maybe should accept where we are at.

Most years G5 teams will lose to P5 teams. Occasionally we will have a Boise State beating Oklahoma or a UCF beating Auburn.

AAC getting national spotlight with Memphis vs SMU on now ABC.... I’d really enjoy seeing a good NIU team on ABC on Saturday night.... pipe dream in MAC. Even if the two MAC teams were ranked, they’d maybe play mid-day on CBS Sports or ESPNU, more likely Tuesday night at 7 pm on ESPN3.

AAC teams are in big cities. MAC schools are in small college towns. Tougher to create a lot of hype.

In the past 10 years (2009-18), the MAC is 16-41 in bowl games. This includes being 2-15 the past three years. Shut out three years ('09, '13 and '16). Didn't check the Sun Belt, but know they were 3-2 last year when MAC was 1-5.

Agreed, this isn't a valid argument anymore. They have surpassed us in quality of recruiting, on the field play, and most important financially.

But, hey, the MAC has that gloriously lucrative ESPN contract that should sustain it and its member teams for years to come, right?

Most years the MAC is better than CUSA and Sunbelt and usually right on par with MWC. Its a down year for the MAC for sure

RE: AAC
So let's re write the narrative here...
Do we suck in bowl games?
Yes, but 90% we travel further than the opponent, have no sense of home field advantage, and the real good teams are coachless during their bowl game. See 2015 BGSU in the Mobil Bowl. See 2015 Toledo in Boca. See 2012 Kent State in Mobil. Fleck took the Minny Job prior to the Cotton Bowl!
Do we suck OOC?
Yep, but the MAC has to be the worst at scheduling home games worth a damn. Aside from WMU and Toledo, most of the conference has had a season or five, with 5 home games and 7 away games, with one of home teams being FCS!
Does the TV contract suck?
Kind of. It's a lot of money... But it's not a great product lately, in front of 173 fans in the stands. They won't draw as well on TV as 2013, that's for sure. If there isn't that one or two top 25 teams or amazing players being featured...even the people who love MACtion wont be watching this year.
Is the MAC doomed?
NOT AT ALL. It's a bottom out year, with very very young rosters. No coaches will be fired in the MAC (Martin maybe), and lots of the teams are trending up, and building their brand. Ball State, Kent and CMU are back on the rise, with perrenial bottom dwellers EMU and UB holding their own. It's kind of a logical fallacy that the MAC is 10th and can't clime up the ranks.. we can't go lower! In 2021 CMU, and BG Could be power houses! And I don't see Toledo, WMU, NIU and Ohio all being stagnant around .500. Those programs don't dip too often and will stay good! The MAC has more against it than any other league... You've got to be thick skinned and a tough cookie to live here and root for these teams. But the dudes playing are tough too and the new league coaches have these young guys competing with very young rosters. Stay tuned.
2000-2005 MAC UP
2006-2009 MAC DOWN
2010-2016 MAC UP
2017-2019 MAC DOWN
2020- HERE WE GO

Yea, the Sagarin ratings typically show CUSA and MAC very close. Sun Belt currently a little higher.
Down year for NIU and the MAC. If NIU hadn't lost all 3 senior starting LBs it would have helped a lot, besides the other injuries.

You are nuts ! SMU is a top 25 team. they played Memphis without their 1st or 2nd round NFL WR
They beat TCU who crushed UT ! TCU has potential to be 6-2 . Lost 2 close games .
Never compare SMU to a MAC team. They can beat you on the ground or air

No one compared SMU to any of the MAC teams. It was simply stated that SMU being undefeated was a product of their weak schedule. They played the best team on their schedule, Memphis, and lost. I wouldn't be surprised if they lose to Navy too. They are lucky they miss out on having to play UCF and Cincinnati.

NIU fans have to be careful when calling out teams for having an over inflated record due to SOS. SMU’s is 53/130. NIUs was 122/124 and 122/125 in ‘12-‘13. Kinda like App State. They’re pulling an NIU...they SOS over this 18-3 run is roughly 107/130. It obviously comes with the conference, but it will be there when ranking talks come up.

I'm curious how playing two SBC, one CUSA, and one Big 12 team in non-conference with only one ranked opponent gets them the 53rd best schedule.
Half of SMU's wins have been by one score -- beating Tulsa by 6, Houston by 3, TCU by 3, and Arkansas St. by 7.
When NIU had its run in 2012-2013 we were blowing out a lot of our competition.
