App State, new coach, Gregory will be fun to watch as a freshman.

Well App wont be a surprise to Cajun fans. Two double digit losses last year. Brutal.

Troy may surprise. Starting with the first game against a good UAB team.

How is Trhae Mitchell preseason player of the year after having one decent year that still wasn't as good as any of Nijal Pearson's 3 seasons?

I understand South Alabama at #1 in the poll due to all the new talent. I don't understand overlooking the only 1st team player returning from last year for PPOY for a 3rd team guy that might not even be the best player on his own team?

I would write a letter-of-complaint if I were you. Oh, that's right, you posted it on a messageboard.

Pearson is a really good player, there’s no doubt, but there’s a strong argument to be made that Mitchell had the better 18-19 season and the fact that he’s made strides every season makes it reasonable to project an even better 19-20.
The only significant stat Pearson won in comparison is scoring (16.4 to 13.6), but Mitchell wins in three point shooting percentage (38.6% to 42%), overall shooting percentage (47.8% to 42.1%), rebounds (7.6 to 5.1) and assists (3.6 to 1.4 with a A/TO ratio advantage of 1.49 to .78). Pearson does win in steals per game (1.4 to 1.1) but Mitchell has a strong advantage in blocks per game (2.1 to .2).

It is easy to argue that Mitchell had a better year last year than Pearson last year:

MITCHELL PEARSON
SCORING 13.6 16.4
FG% .478 .421
3 POINT % .420 .386
FREE THROW % .647 .690
REBOUNDS/GM 7.4 5.1
ASST/GM 3.6 1.4
BLOCKS/GM 2.1 .2
STEALS/GM 1.1 1.3

With that being said, I don't expect he will win the reward as he has more talent around him this year.

No and no. Pearson was in discussion for Poy last year. Mitchell wasn't even in the discussion. Overlooking Nijal this year was nothing but disrespect. No team in this conference is returning a better player than Nijal Pearson. He's smoked this league on offense for 3 years straight and now he is being treated like the 13th floor of a hotel because he is a Bobcat.

Mitchell was so good last year that he was named 3rd team.

It's easy if you're biased. USA sucked last year. Nijal was arguably a top 3 player in the conference on a top 3 team. But hey, mental gymnastics and all..

Mitchell might not even be the best player on his team but no, Y'all aren't at all biased giving a third team guy the nod over a player that has been all conference every year he's played....

Nijal Pearson is going to break Texas State's all-time scoring record this year and jag fans are actually trying to defend him being snubbed for Mitchell.

It’s a preseason poll man, relax. If your guy is good enough, he’ll win it when it matters....at the end of the season.

And no Jag fan is impressed by Texas State records.

I spoke with a former player yesterday, and he said Jim Fox treated players very poorly. There was a reason for his teammates to transfer.... I like App's chances of being competitive this season. I hope to see Mike Bibby in Boone.

Hard to have a conversation with someone who’s not even attempting to be objective.

They play different positions. That’s not an accurate description. I can also find a guy who averaged 5 minutes a game who has a better percentage too, so that’s not a great comparison either.

Eh...it is nice to see it laid out like that. Mitchell outperformed on some raw numbers too...seems like a good debate to me! (Btw, for other nerds on the board, I'm still a fan of Dave Heeren's TENDEX, so if anyone wants to take the discussion in that direction, please do so...!)

Also, I'd have to look, but I think there's a possibility ULM has been underrated at the beginning of every season GSU has been in the Belt. They'll be my sleeper until that trend changes.
