While I have not particular argument with these 'preseason' poll observations ... I would expect both Ball State and Akron to finish higher than predicted ... possibly CMU too.

Here is how see the MAC West and East playing out, may have posted this awhile ago but just want to put it here so I can compare at end of season

Expected Conference Wins/Chances of Winning the MAC Championship

MAC East

1. Bowling Green 11.6/18%
2. Buffalo 10.9/13%
3. Kent State 10.8/11%
4. Akron 9.3/3%
5. Miami-OH 7.7/1%
6. Ohio 5.3/0.1%

MAC West

1. Ball State 12.2/24%
2. Toledo 12.0/18%
3. Central Michigan 10.1/6%
4. Northern Illinois 9.4/4%
5. Western Michigan 4.5/<0.1%
6. Eastern Michigan 4.4/<0.1%

Division comparison Expected Wins/Chance of Champion from Division

1. MAC West 52.4/53%
2. MAC East 55.6/47%

Early thought of mine would be MAC East deeper...MAC West a little better at the top

GOOD QUESTION ... but I don't have an answer. Like I said, have no real issues with the poll, just have more faith by the end of the season BSU, Akron, maybe CMU could be better than expected. All of those are Jr/Sr teams that usually do well in the MAC.

There is an 80 percent chance that the championship game features one of these matchups

Toledo vs Ball State 14.5%
Bowling Green vs Ball State 14.4%
Bowling Green vs Toledo 12.4%
Buffalo vs Ball State 11.0%
Buffalo vs Toledo 9.4%
Buffalo vs Bowling Green 9.4%
Ball State vs Kent State 9.3%

INTERESTING ... based on this Ball State (4 of 7) has the best chance to play for a title followed by Bowling Green-Buffalo-Toledo (3 of 7) with a slight chance of Kent State (1 of 7).

I’m no statistician but it seems like the percent chance of any two teams meeting in the final would be identical. Or, perhaps, impossible to determine.

That would be true if all teams were equal. He is giving higher value to certain teams which he thinks are better.

Which has absolutely no merit. A simple rank order prediction is fine but assigning a percent chance based on perceived quality seems nonsensical.

There are some valid points here, there are a few statistical no no's I violated with the actual percentages on the matchups. Much more accurate to say these are the most likely matchups for MACC without the percentages

Toledo vs Ball State
Bowling Green vs Ball State
Bowling Green vs Toledo
Buffalo vs Ball State
Buffalo vs Toledo
Buffalo vs Bowling Green
Ball State vs Kent State

Of course these these matchup likelihoods are based on my pre-season rankings for the teams. My initial power ranks with Mac champion probs are:

1. Ball State 24%
2. Bowling Green 18%
3. Toledo 18%
4. Buffalo 13%
5. Kent State 11%
6. Central Michigan 6%
7. Northern Illinois 4%
8. Akron 3%
9. Miami-OH 1%
10. Ohio .1%
11. Western Michigan <.1%
12. Eastern Michigan <.1%

Much more accurate to say there is a 73% chance your MAC champion will be Ball State, BGSU, Toledo, or Buffalo.(again based on this ranking system).

I agree in your identification of BSU, Akron, and CMU as the three teams probably better than this poll indicates, particularly BSU. Otherwise, I kind of think this preseason poll makes some sense.
