Sun Belt TV deal looking good
The Sun Belt's contract with ESPN guarantees a set number of games each season with the option for the network to pick up additional games.

Every deal with ESPN over the years has included that provision but from 2001 until December 3, 2016 with Troy at Georgia Southern and TXST at AState ESPN had never exercised.

In 2017 they picked up Troy at AState on December 2.

THREE GAMES PICKED UP THE FIRST 17 years of the conference.

So far this year ESPN, or more accurately ESPNU has picked up the following additional games beyond the guaranteed number of games.
Mississippi State at Louisiana (not a 12 day but not used to meet the minimum requirements of the contract)
Memphis at South Alabama
Memphis at ULM
Appalachian State at South Alabama
AState at ULM

All Saturday pickups under the Sun Belt contract in addition to the usual weeknight games ESPN offers the Sun Belt and all but the first taken under the 12 day notice provision after the start of the season.

App will likely get one more picked up I’d bet. Especially if they beat South Carolina

They have to make the call on GaSt BEFORE App plays South Carolina but it would be a good pick. Think Monday November 4 is the deadline for the Georgia State game.

You're funny.

Troy is not worthy. Besides, last thing I want to see is App State shred Troy's defense to pieces on national TV.

The App/GSU game has a great chance to be picked up though if you guys beat South Carolina.

App@Troy is a Friday night game. I bet it gets picked up based on the kickoff time alone

Friday after Thanksgiving, correct? Should be limited games available anyway and people across the country will need something to watch.

BTW I think Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Food and football all weekend? Yes please.

I mean they picked up App State @ USA already. I don't think they care too much who App State is playing if they're picking up games.

Pardon my ignorance. Does this mean more exposure AND more money (from ESPN), both, or just one (please do tell) of the above? If both, does more money to the schools AND/OR the Belt? Thanks! 04-cheers

I'm sure that's true: make the Top 20 and expect to be televised.

I believe the only additional funds the conference can get is from the bowl payouts. If App were to make the Cotton Bowl, that's an extra $4m which I would assume is split evenly amongst the conference's 10 football playing members ($400k ea). Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of athletic budgets but every dollar helps.

I think Bowl payouts would first cover the expenses to the participating school then the remainder gets split evenly within the conference. But still would be a nice bump to the conference-mates.

This is why the ESPN Bowl Pool tie-in could help the Sun Belt. Some of the available games in the Bowl Pool have upward of $2 million payout.

Depending on the other games that Friday and App's position for the NY6, that game could be on the mothership, ESPN the Uno.

I believe this is correct for most bowls outside of the NY6 and semi final games. According to the article below, each NY6/semi final participating program receives $2.25m in travel expenses on top of the actual payout.

Right most payout figures are bunk because you don't know how much of it is in tickets vs cash.

Also If the XYZ Bowl announces it is paying $2.5 million each to Big XII and Pac-12, they are under no obligation to pay that figure to a team from another conference and most likely will not pay that figure.

I know that when the issue came up in 2012 Liberty was offering a slot to Sun Belt but the cash was half what the SEC would get if they had produced a team.

Ended up signing Iowa State because they were trying to get Big XII for the next bowl cycle to replace CUSA.

Interesting.

As of right now the Sun Belt, CUSA and Independence bowl are the only organizations that haven't fully listed their plans for after 2020.

We know I-Bowl gets P-12 part of the time and Army part of the time, but yeah they've not covered the full cycle.

I don't think the I-Bowl has officially announced it, but it seems it's going to be Pac 12 vs. Army in even years and Pac 12 vs. BYU in odd years. But nothing is "official" yet.

The reason I included them in my original statement is with CUSA and SBC not announcing yet, maybe there's a chance a rotating spot opens up and we can not worry about the Bowl Pool.

Mobile
New Orleans
Cure
Camellia
Myrtle Beach 2 out of 3 years and I-Bowl the 3rd.

That's what I'm hoping for. Keeps the Bowl footprint in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and S.C.

Pretty dang good for a Southern G5 league.
