San Jose St vs Army
Liberty vs UVA
Ole Miss vs MTSU

to effectively pick up 6 more games. I’m surprised to not see NMSU on here taking advantage of the Hawaii exemption to play a 13th game. Perhaps the details are still being hammered out.

Any guesses as to who the other ACC school is?

Maybe they feel that 12 beatdowns a year is enough and there is nothing left in the tank for a WIN against UConn. Or maybe just maybe UConn isn't willing to travel there yet. 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

Well done, UConn.

So, UConn had prior talks with the Big East years ago (while in the AAC). This would align with reports from several college basketball commentators (including those on ESPN) that echoed and reported that belief.

"The AAC’s new TV contract, one of the reasons it was so intent on leaving the conference, would have pushed many UConn games onto ESPN-Plus."

Once again, the deciding factor that UConn chose to bolt: the AAC TV deal.

"UConn’s guarantee games in the future will come mostly against top teams from the SEC and Big Ten. It will be balanced with home-and-home series with mid-level Power 5 teams and regionalized with expected annual games against Boston College, UMass, Syracuse and Army. BYU is expected to be a regular opponent."

This type of annual schedule will be as good, if not better in some years, than what UConn had in the Big East. This will immensely help with a TV contract and recruiting.

The previous talks also would tend to end any debate that the new TV deal was the straw that broke the camels back. Clearly, UConn had already decided it wanted back in the Big East years before the new TV deal was even negotiated.

On the other hand, I don't think it's a coincidence that UConn announced it was leaving the AAC shortly after the new TV deal was announced.

We don't know what caused UConn/Big East talks to break down a few years ago, but it seems likely that since then, UConn was waiting to see if the new AAC deal would result in exposure and money that was too good to turn down.

So in that sense, I think it is fair to say the TV deal played a significant role. I seriously doubt that if Aresco actually had produced money that was in the "P5 ballpark" that UConn would have left.

Oh--its clearly coincidental. The previous negotiations would indicate that the UConn was always looking to return to the BE. Its entirely coincidence that the Big East happened to be ready to take a team in Spring of 2019 and not in 2017.

Val Ackermann has been on record going back to 2013 that expansion for the Big East would only be considered for the "right" candidate, and that the league would like to keep its round-robin format. The fact that UConn had prior (and on-going) discussions with the Big East show that it didn't matter if it was 2019, 2020, etc., but that UConn had a standing invitation to join the Big East (due to its location, its brand and basketball success). What prevented UConn from joining the Big East earlier was its football conundrum (which also should prove that UConn *knew* it would not be kept as a football-only member in the AAC if it did leave for the Big East, since Independence would have required much more work and creativity).

Again, the exit fees that were artificially maintaining the spending and payouts from the Big East to UConn was the biggest reason they chose to remain in the AAC until the next TV deal was announced. When it was proven that UConn would end up making less money than it previously had, it was likely all UConn needed to hear to finally make the move it had a standing offer to join.

RE: UConn's 2020 schedule almost complete
Unlikely they will be able to schedule like this consistently.

Best case scenario, they get 2/4 between Cuse, BC, B1G schools. It will be tough to consistently get multiple ACC schools on the schedule. If you can get 4/4 from B1G, ACC every year and round out with UMass, Army, Liberty, Conf USA and MAC schools UConn would be set, but I don't see it unless the program can sustain some success on the field. Schools in the B1G West or ACC just can't afford too many UConn type of OOC opponents, which would marginalize the schedule.

Ole Miss had Middle Tennessee on 10/24. I assume MTSU will now play UConn.
Liberty had a bye on 10/31. They already had 12 games scheduled. I assume they're dropping Virginia to play UConn.
San Jose State and Army were playing 11/14. Army had a bye week 11/28.

Hard to see why Liberty would drop UVA or MTSU would drop Ole Miss.

Have to have the game in another year and UConn paying a bunch.

In interpreting the article, it looks like UConn is essentially playing MTSU’s guarantee game at Ole Miss, but MTSU is still getting the payout.

So MTSU gets one guaranteed loss, but two $1 million+ paydays. i.e. UConn is paying a bunch (indirectly).
Ole Miss gets an opponent with a little better name but no better chance to beat them.
Liberty really doesn't need the money as much. Maybe UConn is throwing some basketball games their way.

I think it's highly unlikely. It makes sense that the results of the TV negotiations would influence UConn's thinking.

Again, if the deal had been for $15m - $20m a school, would UConn have left?

To me, that beggars belief.

I could see FOX putting together a TV deal for UConn football since FOX has the Big East TV rights where UConn basketball will play.

Maybe put a few games on FS2 since that channel badly needs inventory.

Yea, I kind of expect Fox to buy Uconn's home football games, keep two or three a year, and bundle the rest with like half the women's basketball games and maybe a men's basketball game or two to SNY for close to the amount they paid for football in the first place.

C'mon man, that's called planning for future scenarios. It's the exact thing that so many said UConn did not do when they left the AAC.

All that crafty planning...and President Herbst was still asking the AAC presidents if UConn could stay in conference as football only...

I mean, UConn isn't getting $10 million for their football rights, no doubt about that. Could I see Fox buying the football slate for $2-2.5 million, keeping Indiana, Army, and maybe one other game (or their future equivalents) for FS noon kickoffs, and then selling the remaining three or four football games plus a good chunk of the women's games and a men's game or two to SNY for $1.5 million? Sure.

I don't value media rights contracts, but I don't see FOX paying 2-2.5 mil for those games based on looking around at the market at which others are getting. If I had to throw out a number ~1 mil might make sense, though that could even be generous if the CUSA and MAC deals are any indication. The AAC got $2 mil in 2014 for their 6 home games, but that included a more lucrative championship game and all the men's/women's basketball rights.

They could probably get 1 mil from SNY for the women's games and a few men's games without having to include the football games, so those other 3 don't have much value to them.

I'll cop to being in the 'I don't understand why UConn doesn't drop to FCS' camp, so that's my mindset with their football.

This is a great point. Remember that ADs have to deal with lots of scheduling arrangements for lots of sports beyond football and basketball, so they have a lot of working relationships with each other. Schools like Notre Dame and Michigan might have the luxury of taking a principled stand against each other in scheduling (and even they eventually relented on that front), but the vast majority of schools are going to have several "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" situations in multiple sports every year. If any of these ADs that are helping UConn today end up needing, say, a marquee men's or women's basketball opponent down the road to help open a new arena or sell season tickets, then UConn's AD is going to remember who helped him out. I think a lot of us as fans look at the schools as monoliths, but a lot of scheduling arrangements still come down to personal relationships between ADs and/or coaches.

If I'm an AD and UConn approaches me with interest in a football game then the first thing I'm asking about is a basketball series. It's a little bargaining chip that a brand program like UConn would have in a situation like this that most schools wouldn't.

But in general, I agree. The ADs will work with each other if for no more reason than they have to schedule multiple dates in multiple sports every year.

C'mon man, that's called planning for future scenarios. It's the exact thing that so many said UConn did not do when they left the AAC.

All that crafty planning...and President Herbst was still asking the AAC presidents if UConn could stay in conference as football only...

Doesn't hurt to ask ... the answer would have been received either way well before any contracts were ready to be signed.

But the answer received would have been the answer expected.

Let’s assume the last 3 games are @ Virginia, MTSU, and NMSU. How many wins does UConn get in 2020? My optimistic guess is going to be 4.
