What you are seeing is the REAL coaching ability of Barefoot. That’s why you are losing to D2 schools.
She cannot coach. She would make a great assistant coach, but head coach she is not.
She won at ODU because she had two superstars (Shae Kelley -who left for Minnesota for her 5th year- and Jennie Simms -came as a WV transfer). Those two carried her program for 5 years. Once they were gone, her inability to coach was obvious.
Good luck in the CAA
I mean, can you blame us? All we wanted was to be competitive here in Women's Basketball. We've historically been a bottom feeder in the CAA for a long time. We've made the WNIT 2x in program history and that's it.
Last year most certainly fit the bill for a competitive season; 18-12 overall, 11-7 in the CAA and we protected our home floor to the tune of 13-1. So naturally we were excited about the direction the program was going. This year has been a massive disappointment but I don't think we're wrong to still think Coach Barefoot is the caliber of HC we needed here.
I don’t blame you. Barefoot’s ODU contract wasn’t renewed for a reason and it had everything to do with wins and losses (and the extracurricular activity in her program)
Barefoot is NOT an X&O coach. She is a great motivator and what not, but will he out coached on a regular basis. That’s why you’re losing to teams you shouldn’t be.
You deserve a HC that can help a team win the games you shouldn’t win. She needs an assistant coach who is an X&O person and then she needs to let that person have a voice.
Until she sets her ego aside, you guys will continue to go south.
You must really have an axe to grind with her. Even in all of our past coaches I’ve disliked, ive never gone on an opposing team’s boards to tip them.
That’s just me though.

Not at all. The best thing for ODU and her was UNCW hiring her. It allowed it to be a clean separation (and not having to fire/not renew her contract).
You may not like what I have to say, but it’s true. Great motivator/outgoing coach, but gets out coached. Last year the transfer from RU hid a lot of weaknesses, you are now seeing them.

That’s the point. I don’t particularly care what you have to say one way or the other. The point is that you clearly have an issue to go so far out of your way.

I’m not familiar enough either. Did we lose assistant coaches? It’s such a sharp drop from last year’s success. Definitely perplexing

Nope, no assistant coaches lost.
Shrita Parker graduating really hurt. It was great having her as our # 1 scoring option and GiGi Smith as our # 2. GiGi hasn’t always looked comfortable as our # 1 threat.
Beyond that I don’t have a lot of answers. And I’ve been working every home game.

I love this team, but I they are a terrible passing team. Sloppy passes. I do think it is something that can be fixed.

Big game tonight at 7. Delaware is beatable at home. I don't think we'll learn a whole lot from the Drexel game tomorrow night, so this is one we gotta have, to start 1-0 in league play.

The Lady Hawks got a big Overtime win over Delaware tonight, 71-65. GiGi Smith took over the game late, scoring the first 7 points in OT for the Seahawks.
It wasn't a pretty performance by any means. We especially struggled at the FT line. But it was big to start off CAA play 1-0.

Both teams struggled with FTs. The officials pretty much let them play and it got really physical. Gigi took over at the end and became the Gigi I've been looking for. The team toughed this one out.

Drexel lost @ Charleston last night in a pretty significant upset, 73-59. Charleston has typically been a bottom feeder in the league and has an RPI of # 260.
Not sure if this means Drexel isn't as good as they seem, Charleston is improving, or if it was just an anomaly. Probably an anomaly.

Hawks fell in OT to Drexel today. We controlled the game for 3 quarters but Drexel erased a 13-pt 4th quarter deficit to win a nail biter.
GiGi went for 30+.

Got sloppy in the second half. We had the better team for the first three quarters.

Between both of our games we are certainly questioning this. We played a very difficult schedule (thus the not great record), but I dont think it was even a cross in our minds that this road trip would be anything other than a comfortable 2-0 and yet we damn near went 0-2. We were in debate of how close we were with JMU for top spot heads and shoulders above the rest this year, but this is certainly making us question whether we are even in the same league as JMU. Hard to say, obviously that is the long road trip of the year and Drexel started 0-2 last year (finished 14-4), but definitely a concern. Ive watched enough to think Drexel is still a solid #2 in this league this season, but also alarmed enough that I am questioning just where our place is.
CofC beat Delaware by 11 to go to 2-0.

It seemed to me that you guys were a little more dependent on perimeter shooting than years past, even though you have players that can get to the rim. That's a fixable problem.
Mariah Leonard impressed me as a slasher/inside scorer. She was averaging 4.3 ppg entering the game but I think put up 11 or 13. She could be an answer for more paint points. Her "up and under" method of scoring worked really well, especially against bigger defenders.
I was really hoping we'd pull out the W, as I fully expect Drexel to bounce back and end up one of the top teams in the league, as high as # 2. Stealing a W against a top team would have been huge for us.

I agree with you on that point. We are not a good 3pt shooting team and we take far too many every game. We have not found a consistent 2nd scoring option behind Greenberg. Various people have stepped up but its a rotating piece that would be really nice to know where it is coming from if someone shuts down Greenberg or someone double/triple team her

And to make matters worse for you guys yesterday, Greenberg was in foul trouble most of the game.

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
The Women's team, just like the Men's, face W&M and Elon on the road this weekend. They take on the Tribe tonight at 7 and Elon on Sunday.
W&M is 10-3 (# 124 RPI) against D-I this season. In CAA action they opened with 2 on the road, and went 1-1. The Tribe lost to the clear league favorite, JMU, then beat Towson last week. This will be their CAA home opener.
Elon is 5-7 (# 98 RPI), having faced a tough non-conference slate In CAA action. Last week, they hit the road to start CAA play and defeated Towson then lost to JMU to put them at 1-1. Prior to hosting the Seahawks, the Phoenix will open their home CAA action tonight against Charleston.

Big time league win for the Hawks, as they defeated W&M 72-55 on the road tonight to improve to 2-1 in CAA play.
The game was tied 42-42 midway thru the 3rd quarter. Then we went on an 18-2 run.
GiGi had 24 pts, 8 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Gigi has been playing ridiculous basketball these past few games. Hard to imagine her not getting POTW in the coming days.
