RE: Enquirer UC coverage
They hired a new beat writer this year (Fletcher Paige). He actually covers the team, unlike Tom Groeschen did of Bill Koch before him.

RE: Enquirer UC coverage
Yes, much improved at the Enquirer. I've often felt like the resident critic (curmudgeon) of local media coverage of UC on this board and I want to add credit where credit is due. Cincinnati.com is presenting more content for UC football and basketball than ever in recent memory.
I'll also add kudos to Channel 9. During the weather they are consistently providing a game day forecast with graphics for UC football this season. It seems like such a small step but it's all about impressions. When our kickoff time and forecast are covered at the same level as the Bengals it makes a statement about what's important in this town. And since 700 WLW picks up its weather inserts from Channel 9 meteorologists, we're getting more impressions there too.
I'll give WLW radio an "I" for Incomplete; they still have more work to do as our flagship radio station. What is left to say about the worst franchise in professional sports after seven weeks of hapless performances? Lets talk a little about a special college football season--it may be one of the best ever for UC with the prospects of a CCG and Cotton Bowl bid looming large.

The Enquirer has driven me away. I don't even glance at it. I wouldn't know, nor do I care, if they cover UC at all anymore.

Yeah good stuff....I definitely read that as "this second-rate offense is going to bite us in the ass when we actually play a good team with a veteran quarterback"

RE: Enquirer UC coverage
There is a free "Bearcats" app in the Play Store that gives all the Enquirer's coverage, though often hours or a day behind the Cincinnati.com release.
You do have to put up with some advertisements, but it is okay for a free app. It is nice to have when you are out of town and want some coverage in an easily readable format.
And yes, I have been impressed with the coverage by Fletcher.
Having an electronic format available means that whatever Fletcher writes will appear, which might not have always been the case in decades past with the dead tree editions. I have to wonder how many articles Bill Koch wrote which got bumped due to space in favor of Bungles articles.

I am as much of a curmudgeon as you. In fairness to WLW, my guess is the Bengals have paid money for all the coverage/pep rallys/Bengal recap shows they do 4x a week. I will say that Tony Pike and Mo Egger have been very vocal about wanting to cover UC more and the Bengals less (as a matter of fact, at the end of their show yesterday Tony told the audience to trade in their Bengal tickets for Bearcats tickets). Mo has repeatedly made comments about them covering the Bengals "to fulfill contractual obligations".
Actually surprised they haven't gotten in trouble yet.

With regards to The Tony and Mo weekly show, they've put the Bengals ownership, GM, and coach on absolute blast the last few weeks. If the Bengals were paying for that, I'd ask for a refund. I personally love it because they then swing the pendulum when talking about the Bearcats.

RE: Enquirer UC coverage
I guarantee the Bengals are livid. But they also know they've never been lower in the public perception than they are now so they probably don't want to take on the negative PR that would come from pressuring Clear Channel to have them calm it down.
I think the Bengals are operating with the long term goal of being able to generate support for an extensive renovation of PBS or a new stadium when the lease comes due in 2026. I think that's the reason they fired a coach they were comfortable with; fans were completely apathetic. Problem is the Bengals are delusional and don't realize that they're incompetent. They thought if we hire a young offensive minded coach we're going to score a bunch of points. Even if we don't win it will be exciting and reengage the fanbase. Problem is due to their incompotence they didn't realize how dire the lack of talent was and also didn't realize just because a guy is young and coaches offense doesn't qualify him to run an NFL offense, let alone coach the entire team.

If the Bingles are really thinking this, then they are nuttier than monkey sh!t.
They pulled off muscling the city and county last time to get PBS. I truly think that if they try it again, people are going to wave buh-bye to them.

RE: Enquirer UC coverage
Their whole sports department has apparently gotten better.
My Dad just told me that he signed up for the Sunday Enquirer. He cancelled his full-time subscription last year, but he noticed that this fall the Sunday paper has 3-4 full pages of high school sports coverage every week.

Page understands what Koch and the late Gresch didn't; being a beat writer for a local paper does NOT mean you need to be objective in your analysis. Your readers are all most likely fans of the team or the city. They want to hear positive things. Instead, the former beat writers treated the job like national media hosts and tried way too hard to find negative slants against the University. I'm not saying we need a superfan running the beat, but it's nice to have someone who seems to care about writing fun, engaging stories about the team. Justin Williams over at the Athletic is doing a great job too btw.

Just as an FYI Chad Brendel/Gametime 21 will be filling in for Tony Pike today at noon on 1530. He apparently will have part of an interview with Coach Fick.
