Yes it seems great on the surface, but the problem is that the pollsters are piling us us up just outside of the top 25 while looking for any half decent p5 team that gets a mediocre win to jump over us . The AAC should really have 4-5 ranked teams the past few weeks .

All AAC bowl teams need to do well this year to keep improving this image.

Most casual college football fans see only that three AAC teams are actually in the top-25, so the 7 receiving votes gets completely missed.
Also, no AAC team in the top-10, unlike the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12...and the highest ranked AAC team sits at #16 in the AP poll, behind the 5th highest-ranked SEC team, 4th highest-ranked Big Ten team and 3rd highest-ranked Big 12 team. So, there's still a perception hill to climb.
If SMU or Cincinnati (or both!) are able to climb into the top-10 and the AAC manages to still have 3 or 4 teams in the top-25, then you can really start to flip the perception. That would likely put the AAC as the perceived better conference than the ACC and actually competing with the PAC and Big 12.
But, you're not that far off. You need SMU and Cincinnati to keep winning and climbing and UCF or Temple and Memphis, Navy, or Tulane to spring into the top-25.

The entire post is pretty much right on the nose. The problem is when one AAC team beats a top 25 team, they drop out. AAC will probably be maxed out at 3 unfortunately. Good football, good programs but will be passed over for an 8-4 SEC B12 type team when they lose.

I don’t think we’ve ever finished with more than 3 ranked teams, right? 2017 had three. We could have had more but bowl losses have been the bane of our collective existence.

Because of coaches and staffs being hired away.

OK, so I had to make a spreadsheet
Given that polls include all teams which receive votes in their official poll announcement, the following includes teams both in the Top 25 as well as Receiving Votes.
Week 8 Polls
AP by Conference
1. AAC 7
1. SEC 7
3. Big 10 6
4. PAC 12 5
5. Big 12 4
6. ACC 3
7. MWC 2
8. C-USA 1
8. Sunbelt 1
8. Ind 1
Coaches by Conference
1. AAC 8
2. Big 10 7
3. SEC 6
4. ACC 4
4. Big 12 4
4. PAC 12 4
7. MWC 3
8. C-USA 2
9. Ind 1
9. Sunbelt 1
Teams Ranked in Both Polls
1. AAC 7
2. Big 10 6
2. SEC 6
4. Big 12 4
4. PAC 12 4
6. ACC 3
7. MWC 2
8. C-USA 1
8. Ind 1
8. Sunbelt 1
Teams Ranked in at least one Poll
1. AAC 8
2. Big 10 7
2. SEC 7
4. PAC 12 5
5. ACC 4
5. Big 12 4
7. MWC 3
8. C-USA 2
9. Ind 1
9. Sunbelt 1

This also serves, now that we're in conference play, to keep many of us from getting wins over "ranked" teams. ESPN still has the columns on their standings page that tracks wins vs teams in the two polls.

the perception has already been flipped. we are just now gaining traction. soon enough it will be P6.

Now if BYU gets that perception, then they can join a power conference. 2021?

At times, it has seemed almost as if there might have been a kind of "glass ceiling" in place.''
It's hard to imagine that the AAC could have a much better OOC record than it has had this year, in terms of winning records (7 AAC teams are 5-2, 6-1, or 7-0).
Encouragingly, SMU (7-0) and Cincy (6-1) are ranked 16/17 or 17/18 currently, although 5-2 Texas and 5-1 ND are ranked ahead of them, which seems a bit questionable.
Overall, at least the AAC has had multiple teams in the top 25/30, which is a sign of progress.
