Major Problems...
Man today was tough. After that loss to CMU coming off the bye, I thought this would be the week to right the ship. I went to the game and was disappointed. If we don't figure this out, we will go 6-6 and miss a bowl (FCS opponent will not count heavily as a win).

1. Why are we not giving Jairus the ball more?? He is proven as a playmaker and CC is using him like a trick play guy which is stupid. We go to him once and then never see him again. Bad coaching. You want to know what McIlwain does with playmakers at CMU? (Kalil Pimpleton)

2. Our line play offensively and defensively is Offensive. Nielsen as a pre-season all-Mac selection, really? (2 straight penalties today, one of which was on a TD). We cannot establish any sense of a run. Hearing CC say "we weren't trying to run" is a joke. How many other coaches say that? Are we cool with being totally one dimensional? Defensively we had ZERO QB hurries against CMU and a total of only 5 QB hurries today. WHERE ARE TH BLITZES IF YOU KNOW YOUR DLINE IS STRUGGLING TO GET TO QB. YOU LET DREW PLITT COMPLETE 23 PASSES.

3. Best Secondary in the Mac?!? Laughable. Drew Plitt......Yes I said Drew Plitt threw for over 250 on us. Drew Plitt. Where are the playmakers? Maybe they read the press clippings too early? I havent been impressed.

4. Coaching. I love CC but the play calling on O and D is horrible from the coordinators. Zero effort to get tight ends open early, no effort to get run game established, no blitzing schemes, no creativity either way (please dont tell me that Latu throwing is creative and successful)

We have 2 straight tough teams to play who I think will find a VERY easy time game planning for us. Sit back, don't stuff the box and play a cover 2 waiting for the 40 pass attempts and jet screens. Dont worry about pass protection from a RB because we decided to not bring heat either.

Signed, frustrated but still loyal EMU fan.

RE: Major Problems...
Can’t disagree with anything. Today sucked.

One other thing that hurt was Glass underthrowing Sexton on the very first drive of the game. It was a long throw, but if he hits him in stride it’s 6.

So many things went wrong in a game we should’ve won. It’s week 6, so I think we “are who we are” at this point. I see 4-5 wins max, unless our defense magically figures things out overnight.

RE: Major Problems...
I think the big problem no one is talking about is: Recruiting.

We've been to two bowl games, spent money on facilities (SAPC) but I don't see any improvement in recruiting.

Per 247, we only have 12 commits for 2020 so far, but 11 of them are 3-stars (compared to 10 in our entire 2019 class). Several are from Michigan and have multiple MAC (plus some P5) offers. The gem of the class, David Carter from River Rouge, has 10 D1 offers. I’ll wait until the class is finished, but it’s shaping up to be one of Creighton’s best on paper.

We are struggling on both lines, which is causing other talented units to struggle as well. You can have as much talent in the secondary as you want, but if you never hit the QB when you rush 4, they’re going to get picked apart. And when your OL can’t run block and then struggles to pass block at the end of the game, your QB and his group of talented receivers have no chance to execute.

Only two OL in this class so far, and zero DL. I’m sure Creighton will try to hit the JUCO ranks again to fill the d-line, but if we don’t start getting better players in the trenches, we will continue to see mediocrity.

Sam, to put some 'empirical evidence' into the discussion, I offer the 247 rankings for the last few years. It is hard to do a valid assessment because the classes are mixed, both h.s. and JUCOs so their timelines to contribute are different. The class references are to h.s. recruits.

1). 2020 (these recruits are obviously just verbals and probably be two years before they see the field and make contributions).

https://247sports.com/college/eastern-mi...l/Commits/

2). 2019 (these are our redshirts):

https://247sports.com/college/eastern-mi...l/Commits/

Both are national rank and MAC ranking were not good.

3). 2018 (these are our redshirt frosh):

https://247sports.com/college/eastern-mi...l/Commits/

This was a solid MAC recruiting class. It was assembled the season we went to the Bahamas Bowl.

4). 2017 (these are redshirt sophs this year):

https://247sports.com/college/eastern-mi...l/Commits/

Bottom line:

We have not had the one or two break through recruiting years that we need.

I HOPE that with the new SAPC and success on the field (we are better the last few years).

I agree with what everyone is saying about our recruiting, but step into the mind of a 17 or 18 year old, when is the last time you won a MAC championship? 1987, 33 years ago, when is the last time you won a bowl game? 33 years ago!!!!!!! If W Mich, C Mich, Toledo, or BGSU are recruiting the same kid, answers are completely different!!!!!! This year having 11 3 stars is remarkable!!!!!!! Out of 12 kids so far.........remember 5 years ago the 66-3 losses, yes, I'm frustrated about yesterday as well, we should've won the game! Lets not forget when there were 113 D1 schools, we were #113!!!!!! Lets finish 6-6! We'll are forgetting the 2-10, 1-11, 0-12 years!!!!!!

Couple points:

1). Yes, we are lack of long term winning is a negative which we are trying to erase.

My only point being is that a 17 year old (from Michigan) probably doesn't remember much from 5, 10, 17 or more years (insert joke about a fetus in the womb remembering a blow out loss).

Athletes probably start following MAC schools when they enter h.s. athletics and start dreaming of a D-I scholarship as a student-athlete (esp. after they start getting recruiting letters).

Most MI (and Midwest) h.s. seniors have been in h.s. since C.C. turned the program around and we started going to bowl games. To them EMU is a .500 type program.

2). I'm dubious about all of these 3-star ratings. There seems to be a lot of 'rating inflation.' Years ago a 3-star recruit was a possible B1G recruit. Now I bet a lot of 3-star recruits do not get one solid P5 offer.

3). Every year we have a .500+ record is another year removed we are from our days of perpetual losing.

4). I still think we'll win 7 games this year (4 - 2 for the 2nd half of the season which should have very winnable games).
