Louisiana loses 17-7. App looked good but was aided by some bone head play calls near the goal line. Thought La. looked like a good team but just not enough horses to stay with App, the best in the conference. A shame to say being a State fan but it is the truth. The remaining teams should all be embarrassed that none of us can even be a close second and one has to ask the question "Why not"? USA and Texas State are in good recruiting markets, Louisiana often times fails to live up to its promise/ability, ULM can only look to the occasional ok season, Troy has shown it can get it done, and State has a coaching problem that it can't overcome. Long term, one has to think that App, GS and Ga State offers more promise to its fans. Coastal is a longer term bet for success.

I mean this in no disrespect because I like being in the sun belt for now. But culture is what separates us. Before you guys call me a troll here me out. We and Georgia Southern have a proven consistent history that no one in the sun belt has. App has an advantage that no one has. We are not in the shadows of big p5 teams. No App fans are also UNC or NC State football fans. We have a massive fan base. Best gameday atmosphere. Trophies galore. Losing seasons once every 20 years or so. We keep players for 4 years. No juco transfers or any of that mess. Our recruits are consistently ranked lower than most of yours..but when you put players in a program like this it grows.

I think culture is maybe the #1 factor in determining consistent success. When you play in an old tragedy stadium (like many sun belt teams) have an all time losing record (like many sun belt teams), no fans and live in SEC country....its extremely hard.

Yes Louisiana is closest this year...but most teams in this league are only good 1-4 years at a time. App has had double digit win seasons in 10 of the last 14 years and 10 conference titles....10 of the last 12 if you take away fcs/CBS transitional seasons with no postseason in play. I would think Arkansas State and maybe Louisiana are the only old guard who could learn sustained success...but Louisiana is hard with LSU right there.
This post is absolutely brilliant!!!
Good job.

May be brilliant but not accurate. Where are the many old tragedy stadiums that supposedly the SunBelt has? Only two possible and the oldest is being corrected at this moment in time. App has a good team but the fans should not rag on others stadiums given that it is certainly not in the top tier of SBC stadiums.

It is absolutely accurate. You missed the point COMPLETELY. It's the CULTURE of the program that makes the difference. THAT is what App. State has. It has little to do with coaches, stadiums, conference affiliations, etc., although that is PART of it.

Culture includes a long-term winning tradition, an expectation of winning, fans who are passionate about the program and who know the game, a game-day atmosphere that is electric, organized tailgating efforts by lots of alums, and other intangibles.

Schools who lack "culture" include UNC. I said that based on my recent experience at Kenan Stadium where I saw many fans more interested in the cell phones than in watching the game, poor efforts at tailgating (lunchmeats? REALLY?), the TarHeel fans rarely managed an organized cheer ("Tar ... Heel"), and after the game Tar Heel radio announcers blamed the loss on their team's obvious defects, rather than on the winning team's effort. I could go on & on.

Culture is important. App. State has worked hard & diligently to build its football culture over many, many years. Other schools don't have it.

It if was culture, it sure fooled me. One last word. App is one bad coach away from your culture of winning. One bad coach is all it takes.

Then why is GS having such a rough go of it?

Look at their last 15 seasons...or 40...or 5...any sunbelt team would trade for that. They are only 4 years removed from a conference title and 1 year removed from 10 wins. It doesnt mean you cant have down years...it just means they are consistently better.

It was kind of a rhetorical question. I understand what happened to GS and that coaching was part of it. My point was that if culture is so important how did it not save them? We all know they have a heck of a football culture.

App has not had a bad coach since the 70s. Thats part of the culture which includes the administration who makes these decisions.

You've been saying this since 2016. Sure, it's still true today, but give it up. Any program is a bad coaching hire away from a few years of futility but the foundation still holds up.
