Brandon Polk...record in his reach?
So I was looking at stats tonight and noticed that Brandon Polk has nearly 450 yards through the first half of the season. I began thinking...at this clip, with a couple of playoff games, 1000 yards receiving is a definite possibility.

When was the last time JMU had a 1000 yard receiver?

How about never. 900? Nope.

In fact, over the last 20+ years, no JMU receiver has even mounted 800 yards receiving!

In 1996 Macey Brooks had 828 yards, which appears to be the most in JMU history. The only guys that would have thought had a shot at that number would have been Juan Dorsey or Jay Jones, but since they played a few years with Macey...doubt they came close to his 1996 tally. Jay did most of his damage of special teams, I suppose.

Riley Stapleton (18), Terrance Alls(17), Brandon Ravenel (16) and Matt LeZottes favorite target, the slow but sure handed and exceptional route runner Alan Harrison are the only receivers in the last 20 years to have at least 700 yards in a season.

At this pace, Brandon Polk is not only setting up for a good year, it could be a record breaking year.

Very good! McLeod was before my time, but didnt think Q would have put the ball up quite enough to rack up that kind of yardage!

No mention of Gary Clark? I guess you didn't go back that far.

Clark never had a 1,000 yard season. McLeod's is the only one. He owned pretty much every receiving record in the book after his JMU career wrapped up.

My memories of Gary were the sure hands that caught everything that came his way. A whole lot of his catches were shorter passes that he turned into big gains.

FYI, the game notes published every week include a whole bunch of single game/season/career records, for easy reference.

Dave was a heck of a receiver. I remember the Delaware game in 1993. They came in undefeated and the #2 team in the country. We were 2-3 with or only two wins being against Lock Haven and a D-II transitioning-to D-IAA Jacksonville State. Right before halftime we had the ball near midfield. My roommate and I were redshirted that year so we just stood close to the O Line Coach--Coach Eck. Coach Eck looked back at us and said, "were running 735 all-go, this'll be a f***in TD! Sure enough, Dave McLeod scored on a deep throw from Cawley to give us the lead going into the half. We went on to win 42-38.

Nice. Any game beating Delaware is an awesome game.

I think I posted about this game once before. One of my top JMU football memories. The final winning TD came on a Cawley QB sneak with about a dozen seconds on the clock. He accounted for 5 TDs that game and was named I-AA player of the week. IIRC.

Polk now sits at 920 yards receiving, just 287 short of the JMU record. With a deep playoff run it's definitely in reach. He's had 100+ the last three games.

Yes, I think he has a very good chance to break the record.

It's crazy to think JMU has only had one 1,000 yard receiver in its history. With as much as Cawley threw to Macey Brooks back in 95, I would've thought Macey hit that mark--obviously not.

I'm so impressed from him as a person. The guy seems humble and great character wise. Speed wise he's really open things up for us on offense. Huge get for us in the off season.

RE: Brandon Polk...record in his reach?
To me, it's increasingly impressive that he is flirting with the JMU single season record, nevertheless 1,000 yard season, playing in one of the top rushing offenses in the country and alongside a guy like Riley Stapleton that could easily be a #1 receiver on a lot of top FCS teams. Imagine if Polk was the focal point of an FCS squad that was a pass first offense. He is a superior athlete at our level.

Love that Polk takes the focus and pressure off of team Stapleton.

After yesterday's game, Polk becomes the 2nd JMU player ever to crack 1,000 yards receiving (now 1,062). He sits just 145 yards behind David McLeod's all time record of 1,207.

He should be able to get 145 in the next 3 games.

+1

Brown also had a good game yesterday and Ravenel made a clutch catch looking back into the sun on a 4th down attempt (that kinda broke the will of Monmouth at the moment).
