2019-20 season
Jeff Goodman released the team scrimmages for all D1 teams.

Here's NU's list ... I posted the rest of the CAA teams on the "Normal threads" list on this site.

10/24 vs. Carleton (from Ottawa, Canada)

10/30 vs. Dartmouth

RE: 2019-20 season
No one should panic if we don't beat Carleton. They are the Canadian equivalent of Duke and have something like sixteen national championships. In exhibitions last year they beat Cincinnati and Ole Miss among others. The year before they topped Alabama (with Collin Sexton), Wisconsin, Vanderbuilt and Providence.

Yeah, they've beaten Kentucky in the pass too.

But none of those wins were in the U.S.

RE: 2019-20 season
geewizNU has not liked my comments, but this time I have something that he'll like. https://caasports.com/news/2019/10/7/hof...-year.aspx has the preseason team and player picks. The First Team has Preseason POY Grant Riller, Nathan Knight, Brian Fobbs, Eli Pemberton, and Matt Lewis. Roland was on the second team. Roland was a great shooter, and should have been chosen over Lewis, who was a very bad shooter. Roland was arguably better than Pemberton on my favorite team.

RE: 2019-20 season
I can't really comment on Lewis because I only saw him when we played them. In those games he didn't overwhelm.....but that's only two games. I saw a lot more Hofstra games because I figured we'd meet in the tourney and based on that there's no way I would rate Pemberton over Roland. I think there was some unhappiness with him from time to time on your message board, too.

I look at statistics. I don't judge by what I see. I saw Lewis score 40 in Hofstra's last home game, but I don't give that any more weight than any other game. He shot 11-22 including 6-9 threes and made all 12 free throws. Even with that game, his season field goal and three-point field goal percentages were poor. There is unhappiness among Hofstra fans with Pemberton, who was disappointing last season. He got worse at shooting threes. As a freshman, he made 58 threes and shot them .406. As a sophomore, he made 54 threes and shot them .409. As a junior, he made 43 threes and shot them .350. Desure Buie shot threes about the same at .344. Hofstra's returning players who shot threes well are Tareq Coburn at .425 and Jalen Ray at .392. Hofstra has to decide if they want to have Ray replace Wright-Foreman as a starter or keep Ray as the sixth man start a new player. Roland might be better than Pemberton, but both of them could have been on the First Team by taking Lewis off. Pemberton was an average shooter. Pemberton's advantage over Roland was double the rebounds, 4.8 to 2.4. Anything below 3 rebounds is bad for a starter, even if he's a guard. Neither was a point guard, and Pemberton averaged more assists albeit with a worse assist/turnover. It could be hard for Roland to make the First Team if he doesn't get many rebounds or assists. If Hofstra wins the CAA like they were picked to, Pemberton probably makes the First Team. If Hofstra disappoints, people could blame Pemberton. IMO Riller and Knight are the only locks for the First Team. If you finish first or second, Roland shoots as well as last season, and he leads you in scoring, he has a good chance at the First Team. He's the only one of the top eight in threes per game who returned. Three players made at least 2 threes per game and returned. That's a big drop from the eight players who made at least 2 threes per game in 2017-2018 and returned in 2018-2019 (including Dainan Swoope who played 5 games and got injured).

RE: 2019-20 season
Using stats to make an argument is useful but not the whole story. I think you have to look at what role the player was being asked to play. Roland was asked to come in and score. They both scored about five hundred points but Roland did in almost two hundred fewer minutes. Roland wasn't in there to rebound the ball. He was almost always outside and the fact that Pemberton out rebounded him is irrelevant. The other thing about focusing solely on stats is that it allows you to cherrypick the stats you use and ignore the fact, for instance, that Pemberton had twice the number of turnovers..... and about 75% the number of steals that Roland had. I like Pemberton. I just like Roland more.

RE: 2019-20 season
As NUGUY mentioned, I think Roland is better than Pemberton based on what the team asks him to do. We ask Roland to score. Not to rebound. He scores for us. Whether that means all CAA for either player I dont really care that much as long as it helps our system and team win.

Is Roland our "best" player? I think that's Bo Brace. I really think Brace could be 1st team all CAA this season.

Maybe Sweeny named his first teamers after seeing Evan's analysis.

You will probably have at least one First Team player, so if Brace is your best player in the voters' opinions he has a good chance at the First Team.

RE: 2019-20 season
To me, this was the least impressive of the season previews. It focused solely on what the teams had coming back from last year's teams and almost completely ignored incoming freshmen and newly eligible transfers. It just seemed kind of lazy.

RE: 2019-20 season
Season starts tonight. I'll be interested in how the new 3 point line affects things. I know our offense has developed into a more modern type with a lot of 3 point shooting. I feel like we may see some growing pains with this rule change.

It would be nice to stomp bu for once. They always seem to be tight games.

The women are at halftime. We have some impressive Freshmen, including Oiiyomi from Canada. Late in the first half we had four Frosh and a Soph on thr floor.

RE: 2019-20 season
https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basket...rojections has projections. It has you most likely to win the regular season title at 25.9% and most likely to win the CAA Tournament at 22.4%. You, Charleston, and Hofstra combined have a 70.4% chance at the regular season and a 63.1% chance at winning the CAA Tournament. You have a hard first week with BU as your ninth hardest game and Harvard as your fourth hardest games.

Edit: You're the top team in the last five seasons in https://twitter.com/Sctvman/status/11915...56/photo/1 which was tweeted by Joe Wright, who is sctvman here.
