School (Home-Away)

Air Force (5-6) [already scheduled Army and Navy; no FCS scheduled]
Old Dominion (6-5) [no FCS scheduled]
SMU (5-6) [scheduled FCS SFA; haven't yet scheduled TCU (would be at SMU)]
Southern Miss (5-6) [no FCS scheduled]
TCU (5-5) [haven't yet scheduled SMU (would be at SMU), but would still be short an OOC game; no FCS scheduled]
Texas Tech (6-5) [no FCS scheduled]
UAB (5-6) [no FCS scheduled]
Virginia Tech (6-5) [no FCS scheduled]

And the following schools still have a 13th game they could schedule, since they're playing at Hawaii in 2020.

Boise State (7-5) [no FCS scheduled]
Nevada (6-6) [scheduled FCS UC Davis]
New Mexico State (5-7) [already scheduled UNM, UTEP, and FCS Texas Southern]
UCLA (6-6) [no FCS scheduled, as they've never played FCS, but since USC will be...]
UNLV (7-5) [no FCS scheduled]

So here's the latest version of my best-case scenario for UConn's 2020 schedule:

(01) Thu, 09/03: Massachusetts
(02) Sat, 09/12: @ Illinois
(03) Sat, 09/19: Maine (FCS)
(04) Sat, 09/26: Indiana
(05) Sat, 10/03: @ Bowling Green [replaces Liberty @ Bowling Green]
(06) Sat, 10/10: Liberty [ULM @ Liberty moves from 10/10 to 10/03]
(07) Sat, 10/17: @ Southern Miss
(08) Sat, 10/24: @ UAB
(09) Sat, 10/31: New Mexico State [NMSU has a bye this week]
(10) Sat, 11/07: @ Massachusetts [replaces NMSU @ UMass; NMSU gets a bye instead]
(11) Sat, 11/14: @ Liberty [replaces FCS Western Carolina @ Liberty]
(12) Sat, 11/21: BYE
(13) Sat, 11/28: @ New Mexico State [NMSU has a bye this week]

Well, to be fair, UConn didn't have much chance of landing TCU to begin with. I like that they listed the Big 12 CCG in their schedule. Such confidence.

Updated my list. Down to just 6 schools now without 12 games.

NMSU already has 12 games. They can't go to 14.

RE: UConn future scheduling, or lack thereof.
I think what he’s trying to do is add a 13th Hawaii exemption game for NMSU and then breaking up the NMSU vs UMass game that’s already scheduled and having UConn serve as a replacement opponent for both teams.

By doing so UConn would play UMass and NMSU twice each and NMSU would only have a total of 13 games scheduled

Unofficial for now, but it looks like UConn got San Jose State and Army to get on their schedule for 2020. It appears that Army and UConn will have a long-term scheduling agreement.

Certainly makes sense for UConn-Army to be an annual game.

I always knew that the next couple of years of scheduling would result in a lot of scrambling, but I've said before that I'm relatively optimistic on UConn's ability to schedule games long-term. Low-to-mid-tier P5 schools (like Indiana and my alma mater of Illinois) have no issue with signing home-and-home series with a school like UConn and the Huskies will be able to sell flexibility in dates. (Note that all of the P5 conferences, even the traditional Big Ten, have been scheduling more conference games during the first couple of weeks of the season, which opens up more non-conference dates later on in the season than what we've seen in the past.)

As long as UConn can play 2 or 3 more P5 opponents per year compared to now, that will be considered to be an overall success. The *depth* of the schedule for UConn is irrelevant because they legitimately didn't see AAC opponents (outside of maybe Cincinnati) as more attractive for the fan base as MAC or Sun Belt schools - they were all just a big mass of "G5 schools" to them. (Whether UConn has the right to have that viewpoint considering their own performance on the field is an entirely different matter.) A few more attractive P5 games at the top truly matters more to UConn and that's how they'll measure scheduling success as an independent.

If this is the case, it would seem they bought out the Army at SJSU game scheduled for 11/14/20. That would mean adding

@SJSU
vs Army

to the schedule. Army makes out because they can take a bus from West Point to Hartford instead of chartering a flight to San Jose.

I count four P5 games and three regional opponents, great job UConn. Already an improvement!

They were never a fit in the AAC.

The Mike Anthony article those dates are pulled from also states Uconn's finalizing a contract with an additional ACC team that isn't named.

And here I was being told UConn was going to be playing 2-for-1s against FCS schools.

I was told UConn would be dropping football. Weird.

Looking good! When I presented my best-case scenario, I figured it'd be too expensive for them to buy out any existing P5 games, but I guess they're still willing to sink money into that pit.

Look at the MTSU / Ole Miss game. They might not have had to pay Ole Miss anything, if Ole Miss was happy for UConn to replace MTSU.

For MTSU, agree to a home and away AND agree to let MTSU keep the Ole MIss guarantee money ... great deal for MTSU, they get body bag money for a very winnable game PLUS an OOC home game lined up for a future year (according to rumor, in 2021).

So that makes it a question of going around and asking Go5 schools with body bag games who would be interested in a swap like that, then going to the school paying the money and finding out who would like to replace their current school with UConn. Keep asking until you get to yes.

Apparently yesterday Benedict said he's been exploring a two-day football/basketball package in New York where UConn and a school to be named would play football in Yankee Stadium one day and basketball at MSG the other. Notre Dame's name is getting thrown around online, but there are probably a half-dozen schools or more you could do that with and make it really attractive. I'm happy the AD realizes they can do some really interesting things with scheduling if they heavily leverage NYC and/or Boston.

Benedict has really impressed me as an AD in the past few months. I was skeptical to his fit coming from an SEC Football-dominant school, but he seems to truly understand the advantages that basketball can have toward helping improve football.

Notre Dame would obviously be a great get for Yankee Stadium (which is something they have done there in past few years as part of Shamrock Series). ND would likely not agree to anything in the next couple of years, but likely several years down the road as part of such an agreement.

I would not be shocked if it ended up being a B1G team, such as Michigan, Michigan State or Ohio State. Each program has strong alumni in the NYC area, and would hold a dual benefit for football and men's basketball, IMO.

I mean, you could do a team from the B1G, the ACC doesn't really have a New York presence outside of Brooklyn once every four years so bringing their teams to the city would have value to those schools...hell, even some SEC schools do a good chunk of their out-of-state recruiting in the Northeast because New Jersey kids have money for full freight and being condemned to life as a Rutgers fan is a sad state of existence. There are options.

I don't see any Big Ten football teams being interested in this.

Basketball season starts when? In late November? Big Ten football teams are pretty much committed to conference play in late November and early December.

Plus Notre Dame football always plays its last game on thanksgiving weekend in California. Why would they want to turn around and play in a baseball stadium in New York a week later or maybe a week earlier?
