Might not be long before we’re watching the Clean, New-Fashioned Hate Georgia-Georgia St rivalry over Thanksgiving weekend.

LOL, that will never ever happen unless Georgia Tech ceases to exist.

I’ll say, though, that UGa could score some political points with a lot of people in Atlanta if they’d agree to schedule a game against Georgia State. The game would have to be played in Athens. UGa has played Georgia Southern 6 times in football since 1992 (all in Athens) so there is some precedent.

Georgia St. really doesn't have any political pull. They're just a school that serves an important purpose in Atlanta.

Any data on the cumulative amount of mandatory fees have been paid by students to support this program?

Honestly, no idea. It’s a good question.

But given the sheer size of the student body, it wouldn’t take much $$ on a per-capita basis to really generate a lot.

I know a lot of people at Georgia State. I’ll see what I can find out.

I may not know much, but this is pretty much not true. GSU Athletics might be new, but the school itself has some juice..

50k students, premier business and law school, lots of judges and state congressmen with GSU ties, folks in Fortune 500 companies around Atlanta with GSU degrees.. there are political pulls in the capitol building under the golden dome. The athletics side might suck at fundraising, but the university raised about $300mil in donations last year alone.

Without any political pull, we wouldn't have been gifted this, along with huge tracts of land surrounding it for future expansions...where land is expensive..in middle of downtown of a metropolitan city.

Or given a green light to build this $85mil bball arena with the state government paying for half of it...

The real question is, how serious is Georgia State about athletics?

IMO, GSU-GT annual games in football and basketball make more sense to me. These two schools are less than 3 miles apart (basically 1 subway stop away from downtown to midtown.) Students of both schools essentially gain extra home games every single year. Both sides will see spiked attendance numbers for obvious reasons, which will lead to free easy $$$ for athletics. Huge exposure in the local TV and radio. It just makes too much sense, except for Tech's pride.

Yeah but he wants the cumulative amount since 2010 so he can take to Congress.

That is an astonishing sum. No doubt, my USF is in the same ballpark, or even more.

Annual operating budgets are a red herring, as 95% of that money is dedicated by the state such that admins have no yearly discretion over it, stuff like faculty and staff salaries, building maintenance, insurance, regulatory compliance, etc.

Bottom line is, unless you are rich, a $550 annual fee is a big thing. It's a lot of money and contributes to student debt.

These fees are unjustifiable in the long run. They can only be morally justified as a kick-starter to making an athletic program self-sufficient.

You're paying up to $30k a year to go to school and that $550 a year is a bridge too far...ooookay. The student apartments accross from there stadium is like $1200 a month at the bottom price point.

I'm not doubting what you're saying but I am doubting what you're saying.
