This is a school I’ve seen listed on numerous speculation articles regarding expansion/moving up divisions.

Sam Houston St, Lamar, McNeese St, and maybe one more football school will move to the WAC be FBS with NMSU, UTRGV, and California FCS’s, just like when the SunBelt went FBS years ago.

Tarleton St will end up backfilling in the Southland.

I thought you said it was truth that the WAC was resurrecting half a decade ago.

Tarleton starting D1 means the Texans can finally schedule UTA and renew our historic rivalry for the silver bugle.

When the WAC lost its FBS status, it also lost its CFP per school of nearly $1 million. Underestimated how important that was. This new configuration was planned years ago but only being implemented now to be a part of the G6 by the 2025 new CFP contract.

NMSU has a contract out to get new FBS schools, but they have already been decided years ago, so the contractor will be mysteriously successful.

SHSU did a study that they couldn't afford to go FBS. Lamar and McNeese for sure can't afford it. I just don't see it. I could see a time when Grand Canyon University adds football and follow the Liberty model since they are an online diploma mill with loads of cash.

"Lamar and McNeese for sure can't afford it."

Just to play the devil’s advocate, I will use Lamar as an example. I will use the athletic budgets for 2017 as that is the most recent numbers I can find. Lamar had an athletic budget of 17.6M and FBS and Sun Belt member ULM had a budget of 15.4M. Are you saying that ULM cannot afford to be an FBS member? 07-coffee3

I get what you are saying but you know they would increase that budget with football Title IX requirements. I guess it could happen but now it seems like people are trying ot move teams up that don't have the support needed.

Guess Coastal doesn't have the stadium or FBS support then too.

McNeese St in a Lake Charles article said FBS was probable.

Lamar and SHSU were after the Belt to offer them membership. Strange that they changed their strategic goals over one rejection. Its probable that they are no longer public about their goals.

A San Antonio article has said Incarnate Word wants FBS and is looking to trim their athletic sports as they have too many.

They would need a higher athletic budget to fund additional football scholarships, scholarships & new sports on the womens’ side to balance it out for Title IX, facilities upgrades to competitive with recruiting at an FBS level, etc. Even if that only increased their budget enough to match ULM’s, I don’t think many FCS teams would point at us and say “that’s where we want to be”.

That was in 2018 correct?

As stated in another thread, NMSU and Idaho had made arrangements with prospective FBS schools with multiple meetings when the WAC lost FBS status. But the new schools wouldn’t take the FBS banners until the WAC and Summit are closer to being in the new CFB contract and each gain a million per school. Most of the FCS schools have invested millions for low level FBS facilities already, but more is coming.

The time is approaching and soon they will form leagues for football and then begin FBS transitions for the 2025 CFB deadlines. I was early but correct on the schools.

The WAC will be:

East
Wichita St and Missouri St will join as FBS affiliates
McNeese St - Lamar
Sam Houston St - UTRGV -Incarnate Word (iffy IMHO)
ORU - UMKC (both nonfb

West
NMSU - GCU (nonfb)
Cal Poly - Cal Baptist (nonfb)
UC Davis - Sac St

Seattle, UVU and Dixie St will secede from the WAC and join the depleted Big Sky.

Suddenly, the WAC will have reasonable travel costs and divisions that make sense.

SHSU, Lamar, ICU, and McNeese St got Tarleton St to move up to the WAC only to be a replacement for them is the Southland to not decimate football.
