2019-2020 JMU MBB Season Predictions
Thought I'd start a thread on this. The pre-season magazines are out.

Blue Ribbon College Yearbook has JMU 6th with Matt Lewis as 1st team CAA.

Mettlen shared his CAA pre season ballot and had JMU 5th. A lot of folks are high on Delaware this year as they are a popular pick for 3rd.

This is buoyed by 3 transfers into the program and looking good on a pre season Bahamas Trip.

I think folks are putting a little too much on that and not enough on team cohesion (they also lost Horton and their big Carter but I guess the Nova transfer Painter can more than make up for that however he may not be eligible til December). Blue Ribbon has Northeastern #1 which again I think they lost a lot to be in that spot.

The way I look at it is the CAA has tiers Hofstra Northeastern and COC have proven themselves to be solid mid major programs so even with the graduations they will be heard from and tough to displace in the top 3.

That said, my prediction is that the Dukes crack the top 4 and are the team that actually surprises for 3rd (not the Blue Hens).

If we had the same staff as last year, I'd probably predict 15-16 total wins with maybe 8 conference games wins. I guess that would put us around 5th.

Luckily, it's really early and I can drink as much purple koolaid as I want and put on my purple shades and say that Oppenheimer will help get this team into 3rd place somehow. 04-cheers

4th sounds about right.

11-7 in the caa. Lose in the CAA finals. 01-wingedeagle

Hope that is enough to keep Lou going into the new convo with five returning starters, 3 seniors, a junior and a soph.

RE: 2019-2020 JMU MBB Season Predictions
I have been wrong on the preseason predictions for 3 years in a row with Louis Rowe as head coach. Unfortunately, I was too optimistic for each season compared to the terrible results.
Perhaps this year is the year.

The biggest consideration is how depleted the CAA is this year. Check out these numbers
Number of players lost from last year's All-CAA teams:
CAA 1st team - lost 4
CAA 2nd team - lost 3
CAA 3rd team - lost 3
CAA Rookie team - lost 2

Additionally, look at the key transfers that left programs and were in line to be the next All-CAA players.
UNCW lost Cylla to Arkansas
Drexel lost Demir to Minnesota
Delaware lost Horton to Pitt
NE lost Gresham to Georgia and Occeus looked at Ohio St, but will probably go pro.
W&M lost Pierce to UNC, Audige to Northwestern, and Milon to UCF
Elon lost Swoope to Sam Houston St.
JMU lost Jones to DII 07-coffee3
There are probably more transfers, but those are the most impactful.

There is a huge talent drain from the CAA to power conferences.
Because of that JMU should move up in the standings and compete for a title. The league is a jumbled mess and it is up for grabs. Not even sure who the favorite might be, maybe Hofstra.

I will go with 20-9 regular season (12-6 CAA) 2-1 in the CAA tourney

At the end of last year I thought Louis Rowe should have been fired. When he wasn't, I thought he would have to win either the regular season or the CAA tourney to avoid getting fired this year. Looking at it closer, I think he needs to win the CAA tourney. Pass or fail.

A regular season title won't cut it. The previous coach was fired one year after tying for 1st in the regular season. The previous coach was fired 3 years after winning the CAA tourney and winning a First Four game in the NCAA tourney.
4 years with no NCAA visit would have to be the end for Rowe since Bourne has already established that his expectations were to get better results than the previous coach.

A CAA tournament title would be a great comeback story and everyone love's comeback stories.

dukes beat every team by a billion and GOAT HCLR signs a 20 year contract, rebuffing many bids to coach at kentucky, the men's olympic team and the NBA. Jon Alger remains a nerd.

win the regular season, lose in the final, have all 5 starters coming back and that is not enough for you? yeah, ok buddy. blow it up with our best chance to go to the NCAA since 2012? havent you learned anything from the W&M debacle? Letting Lou go with those results would be dumber than move made by Samantha Huge.

Let’s see Jmu compete/beat the top of the conference and win a regular season title this year -
Would be the first time in a long time. If we see that I think that would be significant progress. At the same time if we see that type of performance I think they will acquit themselves well in the conference tourney especially with it being in DC.

We can all split hairs about what it will take to carry forward but if we witness that regardless of down conference etc you will see Rowe come back and likely get an extension.

I tend to agree with Hart's post. I don't think every coaching change is like W&M. That was like the worst I recall happening. I think some are like Houston, and I think you liked Brady hire to replace Keener.

I too have expected more from the team each of the last three years, and I'm pretty sure you did as well.

I like (once again) the accumulated talent, but if it does not lead to success on the court..... I think talent wise, and experience wise we are a step up over last year. It does seem like the CAA may not be as strong as last year.

I'm not so sure 11-7 would not get Lou an extension. I was hoping for a top 75 team rolling into the new arena. I still hope that is the case, but I'm not expecting it.

You'd think with the success we've had in so many sports the bar would be higher for Men's basketball. There is a ton of potential ticket revenue in that new arena.

RE: 2019-2020 JMU MBB Season Predictions
It's too early to make these sorts of picks. In any event, Street & Smith's had the Dukes 4th in what I looked at today. They introduce their discussion along the lines of the talent drain from graduation and transfers out, as Hart points out. S&S also had Michael Christmas as the best incoming player to the conference and mentions that JMU added two State Players of the Year in Christmas and Wooden.

Lindy's had them 7th and Athlon's 5th if I'm recalling correctly.

From my personal standpoint, I think the addition of the three new staff will prove to be a huge benefit to the program this year. We won't know what that looks like until we see the team play, of course.

'84 - I watched very little CAA men's basketball last year, but my impression last year is we had top 4 talent at worst, and enough talent to contend for the top of the CAA. Do you agree with that?

I think we all agree this year's team will be even more talented and experienced in perhaps a weaker CAA. Seems like the stars may be aligning for a breakthrough year.

Dukester --

I'd rather see how camp unfolds and we get regular reports and find out who's hurt....that sort of thing. Our talent should be among the best in the league and we've added three legit staff so it would seem to align, I agree.

Hart is a pretty knowledgeable basketball guy who follows closely but I do sense he does the rope a Dope on the predictions each season so he can drop the hammer on Rowe when his team underperforms including Rowe’s first year minus Curry and his second year with a freshman core.

That’s besides the point now though because even I’ll admit as one of the bigger Rowe apologists that the team needs to take a major step this season and start to win and compete for titles.
