I went to Kroger and they had 1 sorry looking rib eye left which someone in front of me bought, no tenderloins, no T-bones, and no NY strip. So, I went to Wegman's and they had a full selection of choice meats. They were more expensive like $17.95 lb for rib eyes but they had a buy 3 get one free deal. So the price came out about even.

They were excellent. We have also bought our Thanksgiving dinner packages at Wegman's. I can see why they're so popular but Kroger is at least 30% or more, cheaper on common items and 1/4 mile from my house. So we go there.

Wegman's meat comparable to Whole Foods?

I can't say. If we have Whole Foods in Richmond, I've never been to one.

You owe it to yourself to try the Whole Foods bakery. Everything is baked from natural ingredients, and it just tastes better.

Better than the Publix bakery?

Publix has an excellent bakery as well. I would say it's neck-and-neck.

Wegmans is Marching through Atlanta in 2020.

They are building their first store in Sandy Springs. It will be one of the smaller stores (only 80,000 sq ft). They have some as large at 120K-145K. They bypassed Greenville for now but I bet you'll see one there by 2021-22.

Pretty much follow where the Upstate NY'ers and Yankees in general but move to: those areas will get one.

Greenville
Triad
Savannah
Charleston
Anywhere Central and South Florida
Jax to Daytona

Not sure they want to go much west of I-85 at this point

I-85 is the economic engine of the South. I believe SC is working to make all of I-85 6-lanes from state border to state border. Georgia probably also needs to do the same. Give it another few generations and it will start looking like the I-95 corridor, but without felony speed traps (10+mph over in VA is a felony) north of Richmond, without an absolutely brutal toll regime where it cost you like $40 to drive between Baltimore and Maine on a road you have already paid for once, and the snowbird seasonal gridlock. One of the quiet accidental features of I-85 is it avoids a lot of seasonal tourist traffic because of where it runs. I-26 and I-40 do a lot of the tourist seasonal heavy lifting. When I went to the Orange Bowl in '14 I drove. And I was floored by the gridlock on I-95 that was ALL snowbirds. From all over the NE. You'd be surprised at how many Quebec and Ontario plates there were too. I occasionally go to Ohio on business and when asked why I'm there I like to say it's to see if there's anybody left. It's getting that bad with NJ and NY and Eastern PA. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't move here then try to vote to change everything to reinstall the ****** policies that led them to leave their home state in the first place.

I don't know if it's because of the fledgling automobile industry or not, but Upstate SC is getting a lot of Michigan transplants.

RE: OT: The Upstate NY Yankees Have Arrived in NC
Wegmans announces next 10 locales.

March south of NC has been delayed. They are buidling many new stores in the Triangle though

https://www.syracuse.com/business/2020/1...nsion.html

By Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com
Wegmans, the supermarket chain with a huge presence in Upstate New York, will open its 104th store next month as it continues its expansion down the East Coast.

Wegmans is scheduled to open its newest store Nov. 4 in Tysons, Virginia. But it’s not finished building new ones by a long shot.

The Rochester-based chain has identified these locations where it plans to open stores over the next few years:

Delaware

Greenville – just outside the City of Wilmington at the intersection of Lancaster Pike and Barley Mill Road in New Castle County

Maryland

Rockville – Rockville Pike and Halpine Road in Montgomery County

North Carolina

Cary – Cary Towne Boulevard and Interstate 40 in Wake County

Chapel Hill – US Interstate 40 and Highway 15-501 in Orange County

Holly Springs – North Carolina Highway 55 and Ralph Stephens Road in Wake County

Wake Forest – Route 98 bypass, just east of Capital Blvd. in Wake County

Virginia

Alexandria (Carlyle) – Eisenhower Ave. exit off Interstate 495 in Fairfax County

Reston – Dulles Toll Road (VA Route 267) and Reston Parkway in Fairfax County

Washington D.C.

Wisconsin Avenue – Wisconsin Avenue and Rodman Street

“You’ll see from our list of future projects that our new store growth is concentrated in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions, though we will continue to upgrade or replace older stores in our more mature markets, like New York,” the company says on its website.

But the locations listed above are not the only places where Wegmans plans to open new stores.

“There are other sites we are working on but are not at liberty to disclose as yet,” the company says.

Wegmans has not set dates for the future store openings, except for the Tysons store. It typically opens two or three a year.

Evelyn Ingram, a spokesperson for Wegmans, said the company’s real estate team looks for “great regional locations that are easy to find and easy to access” when deciding where to build new stores.

Wegmans also takes the size of a potential site into consideration, as its stores, typically between 80,000 and 120,000 square feet, are large, she said.

“Potential sites must be big enough to accommodate the size of the store and adequate parking, around 15 to 20 acres," Ingram said. "We usually look for markets with a growing population and demographics that would support our larger store format.”

In 2019, more than 7,500 people contacted Wegmans asking for a store in their community, according to the company.

“Each year, thousands of people who have visited our store for the first time, or moved to a place without Wegmans, write asking that we build a store in their town,” the company said. “Since we open just two or three new stores each year, it would be impossible to oblige every request.”

Wegmans store openings often draw large crowds. Thousands showed up in the rain, some as early as midnight, for the 7 a.m. opening of a Wegmans store in Brooklyn in October last year.

Its newest stores are designed to look like European open-air markets and feature large displays of fresh produce, artisan breads, meats, seafood, imported cheeses, prepared foods and international foods.

The 80,000 square-foot store in Tysons, for example, will include a café with indoor and outdoor seating and The Burger Bar, a casual restaurant counter that serves burgers, fresh salads, sandwiches, specialty milkshakes, soups and sides.

The store is part of Capital One Center, the public-facing portion of Capital One’s global headquarters. It will employ 150 people.

Wegmans facts:

Wegmans stores, the largest of which is more than 150,000 square feet, are larger than most supermarkets and carry 50,000 to 70,000 products. The average size of grocery stores in the U.S. is 41,651 square feet, according to The Food Industry Association.
John Wegman opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Co. in Rochester in 1916, marking the beginning of Wegmans Food Markets. He was joined by his brother Walter a year later.
Wegmans has grown into one of the largest private companies in the U.S. It employs 50,000 people across seven states and had $9.7 billion in revenues in 2019.
The chain has made Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For every year since the magazine began the list in 1998 and was ranked No. 1 in 2005.
New York has the most Wegmans, with 48, including eight in the Syracuse area. Wegmans opened its latest New York store in Harrison in Westchester County on Aug. 5.
The Tysons store will be the 13th Wegmans in Virginia. The company opened a store in July in West Cary, North Carolina, its second in that state. There are 18 Wegmans in Pennsylvania, 9 in New Jersey, 8 in Maryland and 6 in Massachusetts.

The biggest Wegmans? The most massive store in 4 Upstate NY regions, 5 other states

I live in Fairfax county, heart of Northern Virginia. Wegmans is very popular, particularly among women. There is probably only one Food Lion in Fairfax county, which I often go.

The comments are pretty funny

Krispy Kreme was once a very strong brand of chain donuts in Tallahassee while DD seemed to be barely hanging on, that was 20 years ago.

DD has come back strong especially the last 3 or 4 years where they have opened up about 6 new stores. Probably about 10 locations here. I never could understand how a donut chain could make it, until it dawned on me that it is really mostly about the coffee.

This is amazing to me because Krispy Kreme is 10 times better than Dunkin. Yet there are dozens and dozens of Dunkins in my neck of the woods in upstate NY and not a single Krispy Kremes. They all went bellyup about 10 years ago. The closest KK is near the NYS border in Penn that we stop by whenever we come back from Florida and get 4 dozens for friends and relatives

Krispy Kremes is indeed much better but I guess it’s coffee sales that sustains Dunkin.

But my current favorite donut shop is Duck donut. I believe it’s from NC.

Kinda like Winn Dixie here in Florida. I go there when I'm shopping and wanna get something quick as it isn't as busy as Publix.

Wegmans is a destination grocery store... I've gone on for 1-2 items and walk out with 10.

KK came into Upstate NY like 15 years ago and only lasted a few years. Their glazed are awesome but I prefer halfmoons over anything. DD has gone down IMHO.
Tim Hortons is giving DD a run for their money in Upstate NY.

If anyone comes to game in Syracuse...go to almost any Mom and Pop doughnut shop and get a halfmoon. Some call them Black and Whites but Syracuse/Utica Halfmoons are different in a good way.

Krispy Kreme was marching inexorably toward total world donut domination when it ran into financial problems which halted them dead in their tracks (IIRC).

When we want a donut, my family and I generally prefer KK, but we will accept DD in a pinch. Personally, I despise Duck Donuts.
