3 Million enough for a conference affiliation for UConn and UMass
Do a Great West or I think that’s what it was called. Group of schools called themselves the Great West but they never got the six they needed to be an FCS conference.
Surely UConn, UMass, Liberty, and NMSU could throw a few bucks together and proclaim themselves the National Athletic Conference. Fill out each other’s late season schedule or even play home/home in the season.
Announce player of the week award winners, weekly stats, all conference team, coach of the year and a conference champion.

Hey CUSA, want to add 4 trash football programs and get 1 basketball game in return from 2 good programs and 2 bad programs?
This is a DavidSt dumb idea.
In almost all realignment in the CUSA board eventually comes around to basketball being really important. Three of those teams make the NCAA tourney on the regular. Liberty this past year as well. Having those four teams play the top Pod would accomplish what all CUSA fans think they should already have, multiple bids to the tourney.
What C-USA needs is to have UTEP, UAB, Western Kentucky, Charlotte and Old Dominion live up to the expectations in basketball plus have another program or two like Middle Tennessee and Marshall be consistent. Until that happens, nothing is going to change and adding more schools will make things worse than they are.
Was talking about a 4 game conference affiliation for 3M for UMass and UConn for a 5 year term contract. The 3M does not look bad compared to recent media contracts. If we stay bad, you take the money and run and we'd help teams become bowl eligible. So is worth 1.5M each to UConn and UMass to have the affiliation is also debatable. My thinking is it is worth debating. Will it help with recruiting and having a bowl tie-in for the cost of one additional buy game in 5 years. Are there scheduling benefits or hassles. Right now it would be hard scheduled wise for us, unless teams may be willing to switch from us to UConn.

F that. We don't want UMass' crappy basketball program in our conference. Last year their Massey Composite score was 232, which would have ranked 12th in the MAC.
Those of you who think UMass has a good basketball team need to wake the F up. Cheatipari was TWENTY THREE YEARS AGO. They've done absolutely nothing since he left.

UCONN, I think I'll be ok w/ football only.
No 5-year-deal either. All in or no.
Pairing. UConn and UMass join as football only members but agree to some basketball scheduling. UMass alone as a #13 makes no sense as football only. But to get to 14, yes.

UMass/Conn football sucks. UMass basketball sucks and UConn basketball is down, it’s no wonder why nobody wants this duo. The MAC isn’t going to take them, nor anyone else

I wouldn’t mind playing UConn and UMass in basketball instead of the UC Riversides of the world but I’m in the minority on this.

UConn actually isn't looking to be "wanted" by the MAC or anybody else at this point. UConn wasn't actively seeking MAC membership. Playing on weeknights (and therefore having to fly student athletes to many weeknight games) for not much money is actually less appealing to UConn than independence. Independence will enable UConn to have more control of their schedule in the long run (obviously scheduling in the short term will be challenging) and to play more Saturday games for a greater payday (even if that means we are getting slaughtered on the road at a P5 program's stadium for a huge payday). Sure, independence hurts with bowl tie-ins, but the school did what it had to do to ensure that our basketball programs are in a conference that is a good fit both geographically and competitively (basketball is our most cherished sport, not football - the Kansas Jayhawks would do the same thing if they were in our shoes).
UConn basketball was down because UConn made a bad coaching hire (Kevin Ollie) and the school was playing in a decidedly southern conference with no geographic or historical rivals. Once UConn is back in the Big East and reliably mining NYC for recruits again, you should see some improvement. Hurley looks like he should be able to get it done at UConn.

RE: 3 Million enough for a conference affiliation for UConn and UMass
Bear in mind that despite the misleading title of the thread, and confusing use of the words by the OP, the proposal is not "conference affiliation". There is no such thing as a "four game conference affiliation" in a conference that plays an eight game schedule.
And obviously, as UConn is joining the Big East for Olympic sports, it's not talking about an Olympic sports affiliation combined with a FB scheduling agreement, like Notre Dame in the ACC.
The proposal is simply a scheduling agreement & some form of participation in bowl contracts.
So jumping into the discussion in reaction to the title, to argue against an invite -- all-in or FB only -- is shadow boxing, since the suggestion does not actually involve an invitation at all.

As monumental earth-shaking mistakes go, it's on the teensy tiny side.

A bit off topic, but does anyone know why the NCAA doesn't permit football-only conferences? If they did, UConn and UMass could work on forming a new football-only league.

The 8 team full member rule belongs to the WAC and Conference USA who wished to legislate the Sun Belt into extinction. Sun Belt was at 7 in 2001, 2002 but when the rule came down the league was 9 however only five were full members.
So rule basically killed the WAC. Irony is a funny ***** sometimes.

RE: 3 Million enough for a conference affiliation for UConn and UMass
So IF the NCAA would permit a FB only conference for FBS independents, who would join? If it's just FB only, would it need the 8 members?
UMass
NMSU
Liberty
UConn might now, but might not want to be in one later.
BYU seems ok getting a schedule, but once they have their first loss of the season, they really have nothing else to play for.
There would have to be some FCS call ups. Missouri State? JMU? North Dakota State? (how is the weather during football season for travel in North Dakota?)
Army and ND don't need any assistance.

The best thing that could happen for UCONN and UMASS is for a New England MAC to form.
UCONN, UMASS, Army, LIU, Maine, New Hampshire, Stony Brook, Villanova, Towson?
Oof. That post took a hard DavidSt turn. There's just not a lot of teams in the Northeast and they're scattered over four different major conferences which themselves have memberships of decidedly non-peer institutions.
Uhhh ... well ....

Stony Brook

There’s your scheduling alliance/pseudo-conference that the U schools need. They could both probably get Army too and the rest could be easily filled with OOC opponents.

If Stony Brook or Albany can get reclassed to FBS and NC A&T takes the Liberty route to FBS you can have yourself a nice Indy Alliance.
UMass
UConn
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Albany
NC A&T
Liberty
NMSU
That guarantees each team gets 6 late season games. 3 home games which almost gets their required. Add an FCS game for each and they're oh so close.

They are basically home if they get to a locked 4 home games a year, since two 1-1's against Go5 schools or three 2-1's against small stadium P5 schools is a fifth home game and 7-8 FBS games. A P5 buy game to fund the FCS buy game, they are at 8-9 FBS, 5 FBS at home and the rest of scheduling what they want to schedule rather than what they must to meet the rules.
But I'm not sure that either Stony Brook or Albany would really be interested in moving up as independents with no more security than just the hopes that conference realignment won't winnow down the independent ranks again leaving it hard to make a schedule.

One of two things Karl Benson did that killed WAC football. (The other was "The Project".)
