Seeing as how the SEC only was able to make official visits to the campuses of Arkansas, FSU, Miami, and South Carolina, I doubt any of this would have been remotely possible. Especially considering FSU opted for the ACC, which is where Miami really wanted to end up too.

Nobody in power had mindsets where 16 teams made ANY kind of sense.

1. It was well known that the SEC spoke with Texas and A&M and has already been pointed out to you Clemson as well.

2. That said, this is a "what if" thread and should be treated as such, or didn't you notice.

Yes, the ACC had targeted Oxford and NYU in hopes NYU would play football in the old Meadowlands and dandelions grow on the moons of Jupiter.

Roy Kramer kept the rule permitting the CCG under wraps until the SEC expanded.

Had the Big 10 considered utilizing it I think they would have had a back up for N.D. already lined up. Syracuse would have been logical as a means into the New York market with Penn State. At the time they were AAU, in the right state, and might have been willing. The mark against them is that they were a private. I still think an attempt for Virginia at that time might have been met with a little more interest and Virginia Tech was shopping around.

I was always dumbfounded that once the SEC in acted the CCG that the Big Ten didn’t put more pressure on ND to join or make overtures that they were looking for an alternative #12.

Supposedly Notre Dame was pursued and had actually agreed to join and then called back and had changed their mind.

Not sure what pressure B1G could put on ND
