No one lost much in the league period. Compared to the rest of the league, nova lost the most by far.

You’re right that last year was the year to take advantage of nova, but it was also the year to take advantage of Xavier, seton hall, providence, creighton, butler, etc. all those teams were down and we were left with teams like St. John’s and Marquette to challenge. St. John’s failed miserably and Marquette failed spectacularly.

I'd say Marquette losing the Hausers is more- inarguably you can't say that Nova lost more than Marquette by far. And no other team was within 4 games of Nova last year.

Up until February 23rd (at which point we were 23-4), we were #10 in the country. Ironically enough, this is also when the letter was delivered to the coaching staff - which completely ripped the team apart. Finishing 1-6 to end a season will put a bitter taste in anyone's mouth. However, for me personally, I will not let the last month of the season overshadow some really great moments that occurred last year.

The team choked, but I would not label the season as a failure. Getting to a #10 ranking after the Buzz era was a huge step forward toward sustained success that the program has been seeking for years. This year will be pivotal to whether or not we can continue upwards trajectory, or if the program needs to look for alternatives.

I wouldn’t say more at all. Booth and Paschall averaged 10 more combined points a game for nova. Obviously you’re projecting some growth for the hausers but on a surface level it’s not as big of a loss production wise. It is definitely the most a team lost outside of nova though and maybe depaul.

The season was not a failure per say, but in trying to knock Villanova off the top of the league, Marquette failed. That’s not to say the whole season was a failure

There's a huge rumor mill regarding the contents, timing, and support (from other teammates) of the letter... but the basic accepted story is that the Hausers delivered a letter to the coaching staff that basically said Howard is a ball hog and they need to do something about it. That's the extreme short version. You want to see all the wild speculation beyond that, you'll have to visit the Marquette boards.

Regardless of the details, it definitely caused a chemistry change on the team. Everything went down hill from there.

Has the existence of this letter actually been confirmed? Or is it just an accepted rumor?

It's been pretty handily confirmed through many sources... however the actual letter has not made it's way into the public, so the rumors swirl around the details.

Never released publicly (why would it?), but it was written and delivered.

Yeah, the only way that would have gone public is if someone leaked it. No way anyone would officially release it.

Funny you say that. A loud portion of our fan base feels the same way.

My two cents:
I think Wojo has gotten immensely better as a coach since his first year. Even in his interviews, he appears more confident and clear in what his vision is. His end of game situations/out-of-timeout calls have also gotten noticeably better. He has not had any problems recruiting high-ranked players; I think the struggles have been more in retaining those players and/or developing them. I also would be shocked if he ever pursued family members again that overlapped (see Ellensons, Hausers). Both were big basketball families in Wisconsin, and both left Marquette on bad notes. I actually wouldn't be shocked if our Wisconsin recruiting takes a hit in the interim. There was a lot of negative recruiting in WI against us this summer.

This year will be telling. I do believe Wojo wants to be here long-term (and probably solidify himself as Coach K's successor at Duke). I also can firmly state that our administration loves him (he runs a clean program, is a strong representative of the university and says/does all the right things). The one big mark right now is the lack of postseason success (zero NCAA wins in five years).

Buzz Williams' departure absolutely gutted the program, but that can no longer be utilized as a rationale as to why the program cannot seem to get on a run in March. The program has Wojo's fingerprints all over it. Even without the Hausers, there are no more excuses (as Wojo was the one that recruited/wanted the Hausers). With Howard being gone after this year, and the abundance of minutes available next year, it will be very telling to see the trajectory of the program this year.

I do think Wojo gets the team to overachieve this year, and possibly win a game or two in March (especially with a player like Howard). That will buy him another cycle and hopefully gets things solidified and sustained moving forward. I shutter to think if the team underperforms and misses the tournament altogether (especially with an abundance of new guys coming in next year), or - even worse - make the team as a bubble team and lose its first game.

No surprise here. It seemed very obvious watching them play last year that Howard's ball-hogging tendencies were driving his team-mates crazy.

To be fair, "ball hogging" sounds worse than what I believe the real situation is. I think Howard just doesn't have great court vision for finding open team mates, so his natural instinct is to make things happen himself.

We never had a true point guard last year that was any good (grad transfer Joseph Chartouney did not make the high major leap we had hoped) so Howard was left taking it up the court full time. I think he and the team does a lot better when he works off the ball. This is why I'm excited for Koby McEwen and freshman Symir Torrence. Both should really step up in this role. Hopefully... anyway. Our ability to compete for the conference and in March depends on it.

Ball hogging makes it sound like he was selfish, where as in reality I think he just has trouble making things happen outside his own shot. For all his amazing talents, he is human after all and not perfect at all aspects of the game.

yeah I remember debating with GW11 about Chartouney going into last year. thought Marquette fans thought he'd be able to do well given how he was at Fordham. We did see the results.

Yes, I was wrong, 100%. He did not contribute at all (let alone what I thought he would be able to). He really struggled throughout the course of the season, and it is arguable that we even performed worse at the end than he did at the beginning.

It's funny though - his advanced stats actually supported him being a solid player for us last year, especially his defensive metrics. If he was one of the top defensive players for a subpar A10 team, he should have been at least serviceable on a Big East team. It just goes to show the talent disparities between leagues.

its so funny(and what I said last year)- guys coming up from smaller leagues are no lock. Notice I didn't say all are failures, there have been some successes. But it's no where near as much of a lock as it felt a lot of Marquette fans were making Chartouney was last year. It's at best a coin flip....
